“Mō tātou, ā, mō kā uri ā muri ake nei”
For us, and for our children after us.
Mokopuna is an artpiece that was created in collaboration by William Hodges Fellow Te'Okotā'i Paitai and local artist Anjelina Nikora-Wilson.
This piece was inspired by a conversation that was shared between the two artists, about the importance of reo, of whenua, of whakapapa - of the importance of holding onto those things, so that they aren’t lost.
Mokopuna can be translated to grandchild, but its more literal translation speaks to the reflection of one’s face on water.
According to Anjelina, the blue interior of the kete represents those waters, inviting you to look deeper — beyond yourself — and see the many descendants yet to come. It’s a reminder that what we do today is for those who follow.
