"I started improvised theatre in 2004 (ish) because I was working from home and wanted to connect with people --in real life-- and do something fun and creative. Improv continues to do these things for me, and does that for others. My teaching style is energic, enthusiastic, and supportive. I create a safe space for people to express themselves, try, fail, and have fun. I am an advocate for diversity and inclusion. All are welcome and encouraged." Improv Southland alumna, Emerson, is down from Welly and will lead our Drop-In Improv on 3 June.

In Wellington, Emerson has been busy with theatre and film studies at Vic, being in music videos for NZ band, Dick Move, interning for the NZ Improv Festival, aerial arts, and clowning.

This workshop is sure to be a little bit of everything! Perfect for the creatively curious.

You may remember Emerson from Hargest productions/choir, IMT’s SpongeBob the Musical, IDA, Invercargill Rep’s pantomimes, Stage Antics’ Play in a Week, and of course, Improv Southland.

I’m actually fine with the lack of flying cars.

But I’m pretty sure we were promised machines that popped out nutritious food products so we would not have to figure out what’s for lunch/tea/dinner anymore.

I’ll take mine with a “surprise me” button. And one that says “salad -ish.”

Wednesday. It’s always a fresh start after shows. Great time to join.

Welcome back, creatives.

The doors at Whare Taupua are open again for 2026, and we’re so glad to be here with you.
Thanks to the incredible support of our local funders and Creative New Zealand, we’re able to keep doing what we love — nurturing our creative community and championing the artists who enrich life in Murihiku. This year’s programmes are all about connection, care, and creating space for ideas to grow.

Drop in, say hello, explore what we’re about, or simply spend time with the exhibition on the walls. This month we’re hosting Maisie Chilton — a powerful, moving show and one not to be missed.

Great show on Saturday, everyone! And thanks to our generous audience, we dropped off boxes of food to the food bank.

Make sure to like and follow (and even review) Improv Southland so you’ll be in the loop on future shows, workshops, and classes.

And you’ll get our inside jokes… like this one. ?

Thanks too, to Arts Murihiku for the terrific venue.
