As The Day Draws In

As The Day Draws In Hawke's Bay Arts Festival 2020

26/12/2021

I can hardly believe I am writing this post.
I want to let you all know that Puti Puti Lancaster passed away last night, Christmas Day while she was with her whanau up north.
Puti was a blessing and a Taonga in all that she was and all that she did.
We will Miss you deeply Puti.
Puti and I worked very closely together for almost three years to bring 'As the Day Draws In to the stage for the Hawkes Bay Arts Festival 2020.
Puti bought a special talent to her storytelling and will be much missed by all who knew her and worked with her.
Go in Peace Puti .
May your beautiful spirit float free. ###XX

Today our Costume designer Judith Crozier arrived from Auckland with old friend Christine West. Both have decades of experience in costume design in theatre film and TV. We are so lucky to have lured them down here for As The Day Draws In. They arrived today Sunday, set up in St Andrew Hall and already set to work for the afternoon. It has been wonderful to observe the evolving layers being added to this piece of work . . The words, . music, then lighting and tomorrow the costumes. It will be a big week ahead for all on the rehearsal floor. Kia kaha team. Teresa

One week of rehearsals done & dusted. This morning John & Matiu worked alongside Llyod, Kristyl & Puti with the beautiful musical composition they've been working on. It added such a wonderful & rich layer to these stories. We also had 6 year old Numia in who was enthralled by everything happening in front of her from the actors, musical score & lighting. Later in the day there was a few opportunities to put in some of the script offers which ended with a few shenanigans a lot of laughter. We are looking forwards to next week's rehearsals.

It has been a busy week at the with the cast & crew for . Today started of with a production meeting with John, Ross & Janis talking us through some changes, new ideas & sharing some of the mechanics behind the scenes. Then rehearsals with Catherine, Llyod, Kristyl & Puti began on the floor while the rest of the team worked creatively on the outside. It is a magical feeling to be in a space with these Creatives who are sharing their talent, knowledge & skills. Each comimg together for the soul purpose of bringing these stories alive. We hold the stories of these 6 beautiful kaumatua at the heart of our work.

Finally the cast and crew of come together, travelling from all over Aotearoa to begin our 2 week rehearsals which started on Monday. On Day 4 we are right into the swing of things. There has been a lot of creating, devising, discussions, revising and exploring. It's lovely to see the 3 actors Catherine Wilkins, Llyod Scott & Kristyl Neho in the space working with Director Puti Lancaster. Our Producer Teresa Woodham and Puti making edits to the script. The composer & musician John Gibson working creatively to compose the musical soundscape alongside local musician Matiu Whiting for this beautiful local story. Today lights arrived and Janis Cheng our Lighting designer was working visually around the space rigging lights. It is beautiful to hear the wonderful life stories of 6 local Kaumatua.
