"Lit only by the artificial light of the laptop screen, this self-portrait acts as a metaphor for the reliance of personal identity on external validation. Are you
still there when the laptop turns off? When the outside world disappears, what defines you? What brings you out of the dark?"

Aislin says:
"“Open Your Eyes” spreads awareness of the experiences I faced growing up Asian in New Zealand. The painting stems from a memory of walking into my primary school classroom and my classmates pulling their eyes at me. I only understood how wrong it was years later."
