Ngāti Ngāmurikaitaua Seeks Recognition of Its Historic Connection to Whatukoruru Pā

Ngāti Ngāmurikaitaua expresses its deep concern regarding references to Whatukoruru Pā that, in our view, fail to accurately acknowledge the historical and ancestral connection of our people to this significant site.

As kaitiaki of our history and whakapapa, we are disappointed by a narrative promoted through recent interpretations and communications that identify Whatukoruru Pā with Ngāti Ruru while omitting or diminishing the place of Ngāti Ngāmurikaitaua.

Kaitaua, speaking on behalf of Ngāti Ngāmurikaitaua, said the issue is not simply one of naming, but of ensuring that the histories and identities of our tūpuna are represented with integrity and respect.

"Whatukoruru Pā forms an important part of the history, whakapapa, and identity of Ngāti Ngāmurikaitaua. When our connection is overlooked or replaced within public narratives, it affects not only our people today but also the preservation of our history for future generations."

Ngāti Ngāmurikaitaua acknowledges that many histories exist within the Waikato region and recognises the importance of respectful dialogue between iwi, hapū, local authorities, and heritage organisations. However, we believe all historical interpretation must be informed by accurate whakapapa, kōrero tuku iho, and meaningful engagement with those who hold ancestral connections to these places.

Our concern is that public narratives associated with Whatukoruru Pā risk presenting an incomplete account of the site's history by excluding the identity and contribution of Ngāti Ngāmurikaitaua.

"We are calling for meaningful engagement and a commitment to ensuring that all communities with genuine ancestral connections to Whatukoruru Pā are appropriately recognised. Our intention is not division but the preservation of truth, history, and mana."

Ngāti Ngāmurikaitaua remains committed to constructive discussion and to working towards an approach that honours the full history of Whatukoruru Pā and respects the descendants of those connected to it.
