Robots Attracting Interest

"It was a relieved Russell Armitage, producer of the play R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots) which opens at The Meteor Theatre next week, who said today that the first two nights are virtually full. “Hamilton audiences have a reputation for either leaving it very late to book for a show or even not booking at all and turning up on the night” he said. “This makes it very nerve wracking for those involved in presenting events” . Mr Armitage said that he had been worried about advance sales but everybody with experience in the theatre world said this was normal and things will pick up.

R.U.R. is an amazing work and Hamilton is very fortunate to be able to see a production of one of the most imaginative and ground-breaking plays of the 20th Century. See it” he urged.

“The Trons are Hamilton’s unique contribution to robot technology and have performed in many parts of the world, they were a perfect fit for this play” Mr Armitage said. “However the inventor and manager of The Trons, Greg Locke, has had to have major surgery on his shoulder and although the robot band plays on its own they still need some human input to get to a venue” he added. “Greg was very disappointed about this, as you can imagine, as stagings of this play are a rare event, the last one in New Zealand being in 1929. It would have been a rare opportunity to bring the two things together. But when other citoes in New Zealand learn how amazing this play is there may be other chances for this” Russell said confidently.
