Golden Years

This is an old photo of my cousin, Hannon, with the Hutchings family horse, Storm.

Storm had been around since before I was born. There are photos of my aunties and uncles riding her when they were the age I am now.

This photo really stood out to me because I love how tiny Hannon looks beside her, while she’s so nonchalantly grazing on the grass, completely unfazed by him clinging to her face.

I remember one time when little Micky was leading her and she tripped over. Storm stumbled, and I watched her dinner-plate-sized hoof come within inches of Micky’s head. But Storm was a sure-footed horse who was no stranger to the clumsiness of young kids. Her hoof barely touched Micky’s head before she regained her footing. It was like it never happened.

She was one of those animals you could simply trust like that.

This was ALMOST my best work, well, in terms of technical application it probably is. But that doesn’t equate to being a favourite. It’s the first time I’ve drawn a child’s face, ambitious of me. It’s more of a “squint to admire” piece. I think that’s becoming my signature.

This whole thing took over 14hrs in the end. I can’t believe how many hours were sunk into it. I am more methodical and focused these days, plus, I had nothing better to do during the holiday break. And it gave me an excuse to be “busy”

I always like what I manage to produce in an hour vs something that takes 3 weeks. Partially because any sloppiness can be excused away.

Despite being an artist for what…6-7 (lol) years, I still have a terrible eye for detail.

This photo was taken by my Nana when she lived in the Chatham Islands. The left figure is my poppa, not sure who the other guy is.

Does anyone want this? Otherwise it’ll go into the “pile” a place where art never really returns.

I have a few pieces in the pile. Including the painting of the old Hutchings farmhouse.
