Introducing Lorraine Sabini - Aotea Artist, Caroline Peacocke Art and Renée Marjolein Printmaker and their exhibition Coastal ink Spiration.

In 2019 Lorraine moved to the small coastal village of Aotea, and took the opportunity to join the local art collective.

Caroline is a painter and a printmaker, who relishes experimenting with and combining a range of art techniques in her work.

Renée grew up holidaying at lakes and rivers and day tripping to the beach. These formative experiences cemented in her a love for the texture of the New Zealand bush, crisp light and the constant embrace of distant hills.

On at Blue Gallery, 20 Mar–6 Apr — open Wed–Sat, 11.30am–3pm.

Sybille is a trained painter and illustrator, and since 2015 has practiced mostly in woodcut printing. An arts educator since 2003, she engages through teaching, public work, interaction and collaboration. Her work draws from the excitement of being lost in translation, with visuals becoming the natural choice of communication. It is her aim to make arts accessible and alive.

Her exhibition at Blue Gallery is only on for a few more days (until 10 Mar) so be sure to check it out — open Wed–Sat, 11.30am–3pm.

South Korean artist Haegue Yang says about site-specific work that “it is a serious engagement and dedication...because it is about respect for others”. Sybille Schlumbom states the "question of "respect for (undefined) others” is a red thread I see
throughout the works of contemporary nomadic artists" and the states the development of her pieces relies on material knowledge and information offered by the site itself, awareness and taking the time to listen to the place.

Find out more at Blue Gallery until 10 Mar — open Wed–Sat, 11.30am–3pm.

Sybille is a practitioner and teacher of Japanese woodblock print (mokuhanga) as well as a painter and graphic artist. Her show is a reflection on how she took wood, paper, metal, and ink on a walk and came home with a sculptural installation practice.

Vista by Antony Densham

A mental view of a succession of remembered or anticipated events – Oxford Languages Online.

This definition is a very open ended and malleable interpretation of how the landscape is viewed and sums up how artists engage and often wrestle with remembered or anticipated events within their own practices. Artists like explorers yearn to discover new land but must always keep on hand a map of past discoveries.
This retrieving of past paintings as a starting point combined with the question ‘What wants to happen?’ ensures there is grounding of energy as the artist locates new territories.

Antony locates these territories between abstraction and figuration and says, ‘For me the goal with painting is to suspend the left-brain hemispheres representational grasping long enough for the right brain to connect other dots. Rather than be settled into a routine of interpretation I want the viewers attention to remain open and for the imagination to wander.

Antony is from Tamaki Makaurau, Auckland he has a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art from Elam (University of Auckland)
