David Elliot: Artist Floor Talk
Sunday 7 June, 4pm
Eastern Southland Gallery, Gore

Celebrated Dunedin author and illustrator David Elliot will share insights into his current exhibition 'Wind and Waves' at this upcoming artist talk. Learn more about the tales and myths behind some of David’s imagined creatures and see how his stories come to life from original concept to final illustration.

Wind and Waves has grown out of David Elliot's fascination with the sea, weather, maps, and old books. Combining his life-long love of drawing and his enduring passion for books, with a more recent foray into sculpture, his characters, real and imagined, are all inspired by his home in Port Chalmers, the Otago Harbour and the wild Otago coastline. Winds howl through their pages, storms rage against their bindings, tiny ships are flung across their pages and strange creatures are cast up onto their margins.

Free admission. All welcome.

Michael Armstrong: Paintings from a Recent Past
25 April – 21 June

Timaru artist Michael Armstrong’s practice is defined by energetic compositions incorporating cartoon like figures, fragmented forms, and bold colour to address social, political, and environmental themes. A graduate of the University of Canterbury (1976) and recipient of the 1984 Frances Hodgkins Fellowship, Armstrong has exhibited regularly since 1969 and previously taught at Aoraki Polytechnic (now Ara Institute). ‘Paintings from a Recent Past’ showcases a selection of his recent canvas paintings.
