🏀🎾⚾ What’s happening with the Indoor Multipurpose Centre (IMC)?

👉 Find out at tomorrow's meeting where councillors will receive an update on the project and the work underway to identify the best long-term solution for indoor sport and recreation in Tairāwhiti.

The IMC is a priority project aimed at addressing the shortage of indoor court facilities in Tairāwhiti and creating a space that can support sport, recreation, cultural and community activities.

The update includes investigations into potential Childers Road/Victoria Domain locations alongside the previously preferred Kiwa Pools site, as well as next steps needed before any decisions are made.

As the year comes to a close, we want to thank everyone for your support of this important kaupapa - getting a multi-purpose indoor centre built here in Tairāwhiti. We know it will take a huge collective effort to see this goal realised so we thank you for your commitment!

And rest assured, work is absolutely still progressing behind the scenes, but it will ramp up in 2026, so you can expect increased updates and opportunities to have your say.

In the meantime, it has been epic to see other facilities in the region make progress like the Victoria Domain Hub and the opening of the new space for Mareikura.

🙌 A great result yesterday! 🙌

Gisborne District Councillors unanimously approved the business case for the Multi-purpose Indoor Centre to be built by the Kiwa Pools (starting with three courts).

There are still many challenges to overcome, but now work can start to seek the estimated $22 million for the facility, ($2.5 million has already been committed by the Council), along with further work regarding the design, operating and ownership models, consents etc.

Important Update 📣📣

The business case for the multi-purpose Indoor Centre is ready to be presented to the Council. And we’d love for you to come along to show your support!

The business case states that:

* A three-court indoor centre is needed (with the potential to add a court in future).

* The centre would cater for kapa haka, and a range of sporting and recreation activities. It would also have the capacity to host tournaments/conferences.

* The preferred location is down by the Kiwa Pools.

* The estimated cost to build the indoor centre is $22 million (if construction starts in 2028).

At 1pm, this Wednesday the 9th of April, the business case will be presented to the Mayor and all Councillors at the Council chambers.

The public are welcome to watch, so please come down to Council and show your support (seating may be limited). We want the Council to endorse this business case so funding can be sought to build the centre.

Some of you may have seen the news about the redevelopment of the outdoor courts at Victoria Domain. This is a separate project that has been in the pipeline for many years and we're rapt to see that construction will start on this project soon. It will see some multi-purpose outdoor courts built that can be used by a number of codes, e.g. basketball, netball, tennis, pickleball etc but it doesn't take away from the need for a dedicated indoor centre. So we are 100% behind pushing on with this project.

As we enter 2025 you'll want to know what is happening with the Multi Purpose Indoor Centre. We're all passionate about seeing this kaupapa progress, so we know the delays have been frustrating.

The latest update is that the completed feasibility study will be presented to Councillors in February (and that will make it public). We're pushing for this milestone to be reached, as it's important the whole community has visibility for what is planned and we can start sharing this vision with funders (and asking for the $ we will need).

Multipurpose Indoor Centre update!

A massive thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts on our feasibility study for a Multipurpose Indoor Centre earlier this year. Your feedback has been crucial in confirming the need for an indoor facility and understanding the number of courts required across various codes and clubs.

We’re making fantastic progress! However, its actual construction depends on ownership confirmation, funding, and other key factors. We’re working hard to provide an update for councillors by December 2024. It takes time to get a facility of this scale right, and we appreciate your patience as we navigate the process. Wow! The power of the community speaking up about an important cause can’t be denied!

$2.5 million 💰has been allocated to the Indoor Centre in the Gisborne District Council’s Three-Year Plan that was just signed off. What a difference from the $0 that was in the draft plan.

So a massive thank you to everyone who made submissions, shared, or liked our posts. 🙏 You kept the visibility up about this important kaupapa and that was critical!

The funding from Council (that comes from previous facility budgets and not pot hole fixing funds) allows us to approach other funders with confidence. There is still a long way to go, but this is a great start.

And credit needs to go to the Gisborne District Council for listening and recognising the need to invest in community well-being and the creation of new economic opportunities.

This is a page for all those dedicated to the establishment of a multi-purpose indoor centre based in Tūranganui-a-Kiwa/Gisborne. An indoor centre that will benefit the well-being of thousands of people and provide a place of connection and pride.

The need for an indoor centre in Tairāwhiti is critical.

Together we can do this! An indoor centre would give our community more opportunities to participate in sport, recreation and cultural activities, and for our future generations to also enjoy.

Last week at the Council's Three Year Plan hearing Whiti Ora Tairāwhiti CE, Stefan Pishief, and Gisborne Basketball Association representative, Adrian Sparks, both submitted in favour of an indoor centre for Tairāwhiti.

The current indoor facilities in the region aren't sufficient enough for the capacity of those that want to participate in sport, recreation and cultural activities.

An indoor centre would require external and central government funding, but with zero investment for the indoor centre in the current Three Year Plan, external funders may view the indoor centre as dead in the water.
