βœ¨πŸ–€ RANGI & PAPA PRE-ORDERS OPEN!! πŸ–€βœ¨

I'm privileged to launch my first collection of kakahu
Just in time for Matariki!

The Rangi and Papa collection is about enlightenment and growth. Being in a hard place, breakthroughs and the light to a new path.
I felt Black, Deep Red and Yellow reflect this well.

This design depicts the separation story of Rangi & Papa.
At the top is a small cluster of elements, each from our Atua, this reflects their failed attempts to separate their parents. Below is the breath of Tawhirimatea, the child who was against the separation, ultimately dividing him from his brothers. The taaniko is split and mirrored, showing Rangi reflecting on Papa, the sky touching the land, a conversation of pain and eternal love.
Buried at the bottom, the roots of Tane Mahuta who successfully pushed his parents apart. Shooting up separating the taaniko is the kauri tree trunk of Tane then the tree top, capturing the light in order to grow.

Kia ora whanau!
Hope everyone is safe in this crazy weather in Tairawhiti!!
This piece recently sold in a Toihoukura exhibition, Whakaoho
Uru Tipua
Acrylic Paint on Bamboo
- Uru Tipua reflects on Covid-19 saying how "the bubble" is not new to creatives we go in and out of bubbles all the time. Embrace the isolation, it doesn't have to be scary or stressful. The Taaniko on the left gives the piece a time stamp getting near matariki.
The pitau on the right talks about our tipuna that passed & maemae whanau went through not being able to have tangi.. the concept as a whole is an idea of a camera lens adjusting the focus to capture a unique moment in time 😊
πŸ’›Nga mihi to everyone that supported me through lockdown and encouraged my mahi !

Artist profile

Kassana Te Aho-Waikari (1995) was born and raised in Gisborne, New Zealand. Her passion for art stemmed from a young age, she loved the ability to express herself creatively. Growing up in Tairawhiti which is rich in Maori culture, added to Kassana's need to experiment artistically in te ao maori. Although immersed in her culture through her town, knowledge surrounding toi maori was not easily accessible; this proved an obstacle which Kassana eventually overcame.

Kassana hopes that through her art, she will be recognized and remembered as being creative, and inspire others to pursue their passions despite obstacles they may face.

Inspiration comes to Kassana from her home town, seeing art in and around her town further fuelled her creative mind set. Simon Lardelli, Nick Tupara and Matahi Brightwell are all personals whom Kassana feels influenced by, however her main artistic influence is her brother Shaun Te Aho. Shaun is the first person who introduced Maori design to Kassana and is at the beginning of her journey in toi maori.

Kassana is currently studying at Toihoukura, hoping to find a deeper understanding of the art she feels so passionately for. She is dabbling in many mediums, not yet settled on a particular type of art, attempting to find her style. The basis of Kassana's artistic kaupapa is current events and connection to whanau and whenua.

After Toihoukura, Kassana hopes to pursue a teaching degree. With these degrees, she wishes to provide a opportunity to students who lack the knowledge and resources to explore their own creativity. Extending the ability to the younger generation, one which she struggled to obtain.

It speaks about my personal journey and represents my target/goals...
The puhoro design repeated and mirrored is my journey saying sometimes in order to move forward i have to retrace my steps do it again and make it it right to truly learn my lesson, and thats okay.
The 4 points one being a simple mangopare representing ngati porou strength, the two taaniko on the sides is my acknowledgement to Ranginui.
The korowai down the bottom is what I hope to wear when I graduate aswell as make one of my own some day. The blue pitau represents my Te Aho tipuna from Ruakapanga marae, Hauiti. We had our noho there this year and i lernt so much and made a connection with my whenua. The kape in the middle is a ngati porou design I used last year this is the next step when you start manipulating designs and making them contemporary. I hope to continue this in the future. The kauae in the middle tells my gender speaks about mana and for alot of women is the "bulsye" what we aim for.
Nga mihi nui for looking and supporting me along my toi maori haerenga ❀

Kia ora whanau
This is my egyptian mask I made 2018
I went through a faze of being obsessed with queens and goddesses so i came up with this the writing in the middle is the tattoo i have down my spine family names in arabic. I bent mdf board, jiged out my shape, glued it together, clamped it, sanded it, sprayed an undercoat, painted her face, used harakeke paper and lined hyrogliphics on, put lights behind her eyes, taped and faded her hat, glued blingblings on, and lined gold on the crown. Massive process of 4weeks but all worth it
Blessed to be able to do this
Nga mihi for looking & supporting me
