NOise Vacancy

NOise Vacancy Noise Vacancy is a community art project by Tairāwhiti creatives. In 2024 it has taken to the streets!

From Friday 27 September to Friday October 4, keep your eyes peeled for pop up performances and installations designed to bring fun and love to our CBD.

4:10 Upstairs is a photographic exhibition of bodies in time and space. It speaks to the work of bringing forgotten spaces back to life - with the help of a creative lens.

This collaboration between photographer John Pennington, Sarah Cleave and her daughter Lennox, provides a glimpse into the second level interiors of 64 and 72 Lowe Street, shot only weeks before earthquake strengthening and the imminent transformation of these buildings began.

We invite you to join us for a last hoorah for 2024, as we celebrate the past few years of creative and community life that these stunning old buildings have enabled, and dream of what is yet to unfold.

Prints of photographs will be for sale with all proceeds going towards supporting the mahi of Gizzy Local.

Time: 6pm
Date: Wednesday 18 December
Location: Gizzy Local 64 Lowe Street.

If you can't make this evening gathering, the exhibition will also be open for viewing on
Thursday 19 December, 10am - 2pm
Friday 20 December, 12 - 2pm
Saturday 21 December, 1 - 3pm
Sunday 22 December, 1 - 3pm.

Day 5 of NOise VACANCY has dawned and the momentum is growing! Join us at Verve Cafe at 10am for a soulful mid-morning refuel. During the day, hit the CBD and see if you can’t spot all the beautifications that have been cropping up along the main drag, and our cycleways from the river to the sea.

Have you checked out Gizzy’s tiniest gallery or the CBD’s latest mural yet? Not all of the beautifications are visual. Look for and click on the QR codes to be aurally transported to far flung places.

If you’re keen to use more than your eyes and ears, you can ‘leave letters of love for Gizzy, your favourite people, places or whatever’ on the Love Letters Wall, or take a ball of colourful wool to the Derby-Stafford St Bridge and add your own touch to the yarn bombing installation ‘Heart Strings’. If you’re a practical sort you might be happy to get your hands dirty and engage in a spot of guerilla weeding in the name of NOise VACANCY 2024.

Tonight there’s going to be all sorts of fun and light happening down at the library and Treble Court, so bundle up and head on down from 6pm till dark.
A giant dot to dot is being created on the Kāhui Whetū Constellation Wall visible from Treble Court and keep your ears peeled for mysterious sounds nearby.

A big projection is set to take place on the Masonic, corner of Lowe St and Gladstone Road, so make that your last stop before heading home.

See you out there!
