Here is a picture I took of a picture I took….

And there is a lot more of that brooding mystery where these photos came from…

Check out DramaSoc for a link to tickets.

Agatha Christie’s best-ever selling novel will be produced as a play 10-12 September at Ngaio Marsh theatre.

Come see some classy live theatre for less than the price of a movie!

Huge shout out to Conor Eager (@ Mrconorae) for the graphic design, to Azy for using all her nous and cleverness to land the billboard sponsorship, to our lovely actor/models Bob Ross and gray and to Everton who braved the cold at Naval Point in the biting wind to bring this photoshoot together.

It is so easy for us to forget that just a few generations ago, people with emotional problems were sent to a place known as “Bedlam”.

Literally.

Physical restraint was seen as compassion.

There were no medications. No talk therapies. No therapies at all, it seems.

Either you got “better” or you didn’t.

And then one man chose a path of compassion.

A woman realised the power of telling her story.

Of listening to the stories of others.

The old guard pushed back against these “dangerous” reforms.

But in that moment, a revolution began.

Come see the play “Talk” by Elmwood Players - the dramatised version of a true story about real people who helped change the world for all of us.

The play is only one act long, but in that short space of time it packs a punch!

Four viewings only, starting with Wednesday’s “pay what you can afford” showing.

Half of all proceeds will go to Thriving Madly, a charitable trust working to improve the lives and social acceptance of people with mental health, neurodivergent or other similar issues.

I love taking photos of dancers leaping across the stage.

Of actors channeling moments of emotional depth and subtlety.

Of models perfectly made up, with an awesome outfit, and an arresting pose.

And, of course, of cosplayers with their look crafted to perfection.

But there is something magically perfect in this simple soap bubble floating through the air. It reflects the sun (many times over!), the trees, the sky, the woman who - with an unselfconscious joy - blew the bubble into existence, and even, I think, the photographer.

“To see a world in a grain of sand And heaven in a wildflower, Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, And eternity in an hour” - William Blake

Catching a glimpse of the Grisettes (the dancing girls - and guys) at Toi Toi Opera’s recent production of The Merry Widow made me realise how easy it would have been for Degas, Manet, Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec and all the impressionists to be inspired by the dancers in the Moulin Rouge and all over France.

This photo of the dancers from Silhouette Studios (Silhouette NZ ) is not a mere filter, but hours of painstakingly trying to reproduce the style of the famous paintings of the impressionists.

It started because there were two silhouettes (!) of dancers in the mid-ground that I wanted to brighten up…but when I did, the best image I could get was to make them look like impressionists’ paintings.

The only solution to this incongruous look was to make the rest of the photo match.

Congratulations to Toi Toi Opera , to the dancers of Silhouette Studios, to the magnificent venue of The Tannery - Functions & Events - at the Tannery - and to everyone involved with this superb production!

A special shout out, of course, to the couple behind it all, Katherine Robinson ( Katherine Robinson ) and Alex Doig.

I met Sade when I taught her in her year 10 English class. A year or two later, I briefly taught her sister, Aisha, who had the most captivating green eyes.

I knew their father .official was a musician, but I had never seen him perform…had never seen a show of his advertised!

So, over 20 years on when I saw he was performing at my regular haunt , I KNEW I had to go to photograph him.

I sent him an email telling him my fond memories of his daughters and asking to photograph his show.

It was an amazing performance of powerful, rocky blues, performed by a man who had a stage presence that made everyone feel like he was playing in their lounge, having a musical conversation just with them.

But out in the foyer, taking the tickets, was someone else who had her own unmistakable charisma. Paul’s third daughter, Sanura. She had Aisha’s green eyes, and Julia Roberts’ million dollar smile.

The foyer of a comedy club is not the ideal place to photograph someone, but Sanura’s natural beauty transcended the mundane environment.

The music with this post is by Paul, titled Sanura.

Networking with the lovely and talented .hulme and quickly morphed into an impromptu makeup session and photoshoot. Although Raman’s work can’t easily be seen in these moody pictures, it really is exquisite!

Keep an eye out for more pictures to come out of future collaborations by the three of us!

I was honoured to be able to help photograph the wedding of this man’s son and his daughter-in-law last week.

I have always thought older traditional Sikh men looked fantastically photogenic with their turbans and beards, but I had never felt forward enough to ask to photograph one.

And then, by a stroke of Providence or incredibly good luck, I got asked out of the blue to photograph a Sikh wedding.

What an INCREDIBLE experience!!! I was the only Pakeha there on each of the three days, and likely the only one who didn’t speak Punjabi. But I was treated like a dear friend rather than a humble outsider providing a service.

Everyone was incredibly hospitable, warm, generous and kind.

If you ever get the chance to enjoy Punjabi hospitality, seize the opportunity with both hands! It will be an experience you will never forget.

But if you prefer your white bread, your butter, your meat and 2 veg, then “pass out of [the cultural] threshing floor/into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears…”

As for me, I am blessed to greet the newcomer to our adopted land with a hearty “Sat Sri Akal!” And my humble effort and reminding them that — in my heart, at least, They Are Us — has been repaid a thousand fold when, at their joyful celebration they took me into their fold and said, “and You are Us!”

Sat Sri Akal, dhanvaad and Shukrana. 🫶🏻🙏🫶🏻

Two of my favourite zombies in the EnZomble of ’s The Addams Family are played by my dear friends (Bee Rose) and (Leah “Nemo” Williams).

The leads are AMAZING and deserve all the hype they’ve gotten.

But Zombies are people too! And they deserve recognition for their tallent and hard work!

And these two zombies, in particular, were very kind to let me photograph them in their semi-corporeal forums!

Come see The Addams Family during their last two shows! Saturday matinee, plus Saturday night! !

You have to be just the right kind of “kooky and creepy” to fully appreciate The Addams Family.
And even more so to spend five months of your life rehearsing the singing, the dancing and the zombie-like undead movements required to be in the show’s enZomble!
But we really have to take our hats off to the undead stewardess .hawess who not only transformed into a zombie, but then very gamely allowed me to take her picture in such a way to make her look like a bobblehead!
We assure you the look is caused by a fisheye lens. Happily, the computer can automatically correct the distortion caused by the lens. That’s what you will see in the last picture.
Come to the show and decide for yourself if the computer got it right!
As always, a fantastic production from

A big shout out to all the actors, creatives and crew.
Keep an eye out for the insanely talented Caelan Thomas, the musical director who REALLY looks like he should be playing Toccata and Fugue in D minor!
In the meantime, Stewardess Lydia’s plaintive eyes ask….”have you bought your tickets yet….!!!”
