City Choir Dunedin

City Choir Dunedin City Choir Dunedin is for singers from all walks of life who share our delight in choral singing.

As Dunedin's leading exponent of large-scale choral works, City Choir Dunedin strives for the highest standards in performing the classics of the repertoire, such as Bach's "St Matthew Passion", Handel's "Messiah" and the Verdi "Requiem". The Choir also enjoys presenting contemporary works and commissions new choral works from New Zealand composers from time to time. The Choir provides a forum for

young, aspiring soloists and welcomes opportunities to perform with other choirs, such as the Invercargill A Capella Singers, the Auckland Choral Society, the Christchurch City Choir and Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir. The Choir is fortunate to have the orchestral support of the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra for most of its concerts, and enjoy opportunities to perform with the NZSO (New Zealand Symphony Orchestra). Vision

Congratulations to everyone, but in particular to Peter Adams 🥂

We're thrilled to see three outstanding choral leaders recognised with an MNZM in the 2026 King's Birthday honours: Rachael Griffiths-Hughes (Director of Music at St Peter's Cathedral in Hamilton and former director of Hamilton Civic Choir), Alison Talmage (leader of the CeleBRation Choir), and Peter Adams (former Music Director of Dunedin City Choir). We're equally delighted to see Miriam Spragg (administrator of Christchurch City Chorus) awarded a KSM, alongside two others in the wider music community: Mary Gow and Alison Price. A special nod, also, to Adrienne Jansen (sister-in-law of the late Guy Jansen, and editor of his book "Sing New Zealand") who has been awarded an ONZM for her services to writing and publishing. Hearty congratulations to them all!

THE packed Dunedin Town Hall was taken on an emotional roller-coaster ride by the combined forces of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra and an enlarged City Choir Dunedin on Saturday night.

During the thunderous prolonged applause and standing ovation , I pondered that this must have been the most epic event, in the classical musical tradition, that the Town Hall had ever experienced.

This concert was nothing but extraordinary, and it was so apt that this was to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra, no doubt the jewel in Dunedin’s classical musical crown.

Thus it was felicitous that the concert opened with Fanfare ‘Kotahitanga’ by Dunedin’s own Anthony Ritchie. The combined brass sections welcomed all in a spirit of unity and togetherness.

Symphony No 2 ‘Resurrection’ by Mahler is a monumental masterpiece of orchestral architecture in five movements. At all times conductor James Judd was in complete control of the orchestra as they flawlessly managed rapid changes in orchestration, tempo and dynamics.

The symphony showcases Mahler’s skill in a number of areas — orchestration and use of orchestral colours, dramatic skills with sudden changes of tempo and dynamics, the ability to recreate stylistic nuances of music from his youth, the use of silence for dramatic effect, and his ability to compose a symphony free from perceived shackles of classical symphonic form.

The fourth movement is a song powerfully sung by mezzo-soprano , Deborah Humble. Her rich voice carried well over the orchestra; her German consonants were delicious.

The gigantic fifth movement combined all of Mahler’s forces, including an off-stage band. The psychology of expectation grew as the audience waited patiently for soprano Anna Leese and the large choir (director David Burchell) to sing. Leese, singing while sitting, gave an angelic heavenly aspect to her glorious sound that gradually arose from the hushed tones of the seated choir. All now standing, choral strength then erupted, backing Leese and Humble, and inescapably , with the addition of Burchell at the organ, the huge symphonic climax resonated in celebratory fashion.

DSO is delighted to celebrate its sixtieth anniversary with a landmark collaboration with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. The two orchestras will join forces, sitting side by side, to bring to life one of the most glorious works of the symphonic repertoire: Mahler’s Second Symphony, nicknamed ‘Resurrection’. Voted the fifth greatest symphony of all time by BBC Music Magazine, our performance of Mahler’s immense ‘Resurrection’ Symphony will bring together the talents of DSO, NZSO, vocal soloists, and a choir of 150 strong!
