NEW LOCAL PLAY EXPLORES WHAT SHAKESPEARE DIDN’T

Desdemona and Emilia are best friends. Unfortunately, their husbands are dicks.

Stitched, A new play by Ellie Swann, featuring Laniet Swann and Ellie Swann.

Ōtepoti theatre all-rounder Ellie Swann has picked up the quill to give an offstage peek in a brand new play about Desdemona and Emilia.
Ostensibly a ‘between the scenes’, Stitched weaves together our few known facts about Desdemona and Emilia, and those which can be surmised. The storytelling is unapologetically about women, from their experience and perspectives. In this world we don’t need to know the men’s names; after 400 years of analysing their motives, the nicknames they have acquired will suffice to tell us what we need to know.

We are proud that both Ellie and Lani are alumni of the University of Otago Theatre Studies programme. They are good eggs.

Our very warmest congratulations to Dr Ellen Murray on graduating with her PhD in Theatre Studies today. Ellen's thesis was recognised as exceptional by her international examination panel and by the Division of Humanities, University of Otago. Ellen is pictured with Theatre Studies Professional Practice Fellow Marty Roberts and Jeff the dog in front of the iconic Allen Hall red door.

Looking for a gripping night out in Dunedin?
Dunedin Repertory Society are thrilled to bring Harold Pinter’s classic psychological comedy The Dumb Waiter to the stage at The Playhouse Dunedin. When two hitmen are cooped up in a subterranean room waiting for their next assignment, a mechanical dumb waiter suddenly begins sending down bizarre food orders.
Expect sharp dialogue, dark humour, and a building tension that will keep you guessing until the very last second.

Monday July 20th! AUDITION for LTT show.

There is an upcoming audition for a Lunchtime Theatre this semester, and a separate 15 minute scene.

We are looking for three individuals for the LTT, and two for the smaller scene.
The Lunchtime Theatre, 'Calling Love', focusses on family issues in an immigrant family.

The 15 minute scene is a dark comedy set in a call centre, titled 'Please Hold'.

The audition will be held 1pm-2:30 in the activities hall in OUSA. We welcome people from all backgrounds and encourage you to attend!

PROJECT MOMENTUM - VOL 1 | Sun 12th April

The 2026 Caroline Plummer Fellow in Community Dance, Jeremy Beck is launching Project MOMENTUM this coming Sunday!

Project MOMENTUM has three volumes which will be unfolding across the year. Each volume invites
local community dancers to perform alongside professional dance artists from around Aotearoa, accompanied by live music from Ōtepoti and wider Otago-based musicians.

VOLUME 1 – ‘Improvisations of the First Kind’ – sets the project in motion with an improvised live music and contemporary dance event welcoming guest artists Kosta Bogoievski, Josie Archer (Ōtautahi), and Ōtepoti-based Oliver Connew - and accompanied by live music from Craig Monk and Tenzin Mullin (OMMU).

Come along for a relaxed afternoon of live music and dance - and the start of an incredible series!
