Happy World Art Day 2025! ✨🍊

Let’s give a round of applause to the real artists—those with persevering minds, passionate hearts, and skillful hands! 🙌

Unlike artificially generated works, our local creators pour their soul and sweat into every piece. Whether it’s by buying their art, attending exhibits and performances, or simply hyping them up—supporting human-made art keeps our culture alive and thriving.

Because let’s be real: no stolen, prompted “art” can beat the ones that come from the heart. ❤️‍🔥

Siau-Jiun Lim is a Ōtepoti, Dunedin-based artist who explores the relationship between humanity and the environment. She holds a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Honours) and has been awarded the Con. Hutton Scholarship from the Dunedin School of Art, Otago Polytechnic. The Wallace Arts Trust has collected several of her works. Jiun uses various materials in her art, including acrylics, inks, pastels, wax, and custom-made tools like feathers and leaves. Her Malaysian heritage and over 19 years of living in New Zealand inform her unique artistic perspective, blending cultural influences with New Zealand's strong environmental ethic. One of her making processes is driven by interconnecting with community projects and collaborative art projects.

Inspired by artists like Joan Mitchell, Wolf Kahn, Henri Matisse, Willem de Kooning and Cecily Brown. Jiun believes that art represents the interconnectedness of all living things, the balance between chaos and order, and the subconscious and intentional mind.

Kirsten McAuley lives in Ōtepoti, Dunedin. She found her way to painting and drawing after changing direction from medicine and research some years ago now. She enjoys working with charcoal and oil paints and particularly enjoys the process of still life, finding the beauty in everyday objects and seeing them as shapes, shadows, light, and colours without the clutter of their usual environment. She began exploring and teaching herself but has since taken part in various classes and courses and enjoys the constant process of evolving and learning from fellow artists and from making many 'happy mistakes'.

This is her second collaborative community exhibition. Kirsten also exhibits with the Otago Art Society, where she received the John H. Pledger Drawing Award in 2023 and was subsequently invited to submit paintings for the OAS Ultimate Showcase exhibition in 2024.

Anne Cloonan is an Aussie/Kiwi who has called Dunedin home since 2008. She went to art school a long time ago in Sydney. In the 70s and 80s, she worked as an admin person in a contemporary art gallery, which was immensely stimulating. A stint as gallery manager in an antiquarian bookshop/art gallery opened up a whole new world and inspired her to retrain as a bookbinder/restorer. She graduated from the Sydney Institute of Technology with distinction and an award for excellence.

Anne spent the next 30 years in private practice as an antiquarian book restorer. She has great respect and love for the work of the painters and printmakers, mapmakers and topographical artists of the 16th-19th centuries whose work before the invention of photography was, and remains, such a powerful means of communication.

Anne's work was initially inspired by the desire to communicate and share her love for the wide open spaces of her childhood. She continued to attend painting and drawing classes in both Australia and at the Dunedin School of Art, Otago Polytech and is now learning to paint Otago with a particular love for our moody seas and skies. She has exhibited in student and group shows in both countries.

Lisa Perniskie is an Ōtepoti based artist who is passionate about her work. She graduated from the Otago Polytechnic, School of Art with a Bachelor of Fine Arts majoring in sculpture. Her art practice is process based, where work is created through the use of materials, found objects and the making process. Focusing on the making informs her ideas, leading to concepts evolving. She is inspired by nature and beauty found in the unseen, in the everyday and more recently hidden mycelium networks that sustain plant life. Lisa values the way art can be therapeutic, giving a voice to important issues facing the current world and bringing ideas into people's awareness to open a dialogue.

Lisa () has exhibited her work in solo and group shows in Otepoti and other cities in Aotearoa.

The Ōtepoti Dunedin Community Gallery, located down from the Octagon at 26 Princes Street, is a versatile exhibition space for the city’s artists and community groups. The gallery emphasises community involvement, local voices, and inclusive participation.

It plays host to a range of diverse exhibitions, featuring works in photography, ceramics, performing art, mixed media, and contemporary art. The gallery frequently showcases pieces from artists who do not have formal representation, as well as those exploring new ideas. Additionally, it highlights established artists who wish to present their works directly to the public.

The gallery was established by Council in 1997 and has been an integral part of Dunedin's art scene since then. It is managed by the Dunedin City Council’s Ara Toi/ Creative Partnerships team https://www.dunedin.govt.nz/services/arts-and-culture

Penny Smith's paintings focus on the landscapes of her local area, particularly the wetlands and marshes. She has lived in Ōtepoti, Dunedin, for most of her life and considers it her forever home.

Her interest in books and bookbinding has led her to incorporate this craft into her passion for collage, resulting in a series of artist books. These books explore color and form through various themes, using painted and hand-printed papers. Penny has a strong belief in the power of sketchbooks to help in exploring new ideas and enjoys sharing her skills and creative processes with others through workshops and talks.

Penny graduated from the Dunedin School of Art with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Since then, she has held several successful solo and group exhibitions at various galleries in Dunedin. Her work is currently represented exclusively by Moray Gallery.
