SAVOIE de LACY is proud to present Unknown Artists, an exhibition featuring the nameless, tireless artists behind the worlds most amusing and entertaining naive arts and crafts. Receiving little to no acknowledgement from the art world, and playing a bit-part role unworthy of gallery space, these artists names are never given praise or thought. This exhibition celebrates the lowest tier within the art world, the underground kings and queens that never got their 15 seconds of fame, paying homage to the joy they give all nut-jobs who collect such weird nit-bits. Bought from local op-shops throughout the Otago Region, and from various market stalls around Mexico, Yonel Watene has curated a small show that asks us: Who the f**k made this s**t?

SAVOIE de LACY's inaugural show ft. paintings by Yonel Watene. This show was inspired by the memories of "being a little Maori kid and not having s**t but wanting cool stuff," which is portrayed through a series of self-portraits dressed in expensive clothing. Watene wanted to paint Maori portraiture in the same light as great African-American painters, such as Henry Taylor and Kerry-James Marshall, who represent their brothers and sisters in a contemporary setting.
