Raku by Lynne Wilson

Raku by Lynne Wilson My work in decorative ceramics both raku fired and otherwise.

This page is dedicated to June Boulton, my past mentor in the art of the Raku method of firing decorative ceramic-ware. June ignited a life long passion for the craft in me and other members of the Cromwell Pottery Club. My wall works and lidded structures are available at: Eade Gallery, Clyde; Moray Gallery, Dunedin; my home gallery at 93 Molyneux Ave, Cromwell

My raku kiln, Burnice, has been idle since Christmas Day, following disappointing results. Without a pyrometer, my eyes were the only temperature guide. Should have gone to Specsavers!!
Courage plucked and pyrometer recovered, here are yesterday's results - 4 Waka series for Wayne Edgerton's Tuatapere gallery.

It's been many miles and lessons learnt since my last post as a newly hatched nomad ceramicist.
Since then winter was spent mainly in Levin, Himatangi Beach and te Wairarapa making new clay friends at Levin Pottery Club, discovering the Greytown Contemporary Gallery and time with my NI loved ones. All the while working at a leisurely pace towards what is now a collection of all sorts about to be fired.
Meanwhile my raku kiln Burnice has been in the care of the Ranfurly Pottery Club where there are severe fire restrictions. Not ideal sums it up nicely. Which is why she's coming to Tuatapere, Southland, where I'll spend much of the next 6 months at Last Light Lodge.
But that's another story.

It's an interesting time figuring out .
So far, I've had 2 breakages due to carelessness and bumpy roads, and the underglazes I ordered a week ago didn't arrive before I left yesterday for my two weeks in Tuatapere. Stuff like that...
Will ponder solutions while gathering apples in the Last Light Lodge orchard this beautiful evening.

What else would I make for Ranfurly and Napier but my Art Deco series.

Day 6/10 - Art Deco containers (2016)
A visit to Ranfurly may have rekindled my fondness for Art Deco. Where would we be without sparks... apart from cold? 😄💥🔥

Big changes ahead with my home and work place on the market as of yesterday.
I'm excited to begin my next chapter in motorhome (Isobel), including the opportunity to adjust my ceramic life to suit a nomad.
Winter will be spent with family and friends in the lower NI, and cold clay will be replaced with wool and fabric to keep my hands warm and supple.
Warm months will be mainly in Ranfurly, Cromwell and Southland.
