Picasso once said, ā€œSculpture is the art of intelligence.ā€ Unlike paintingā€”which relies on illusions of depth on a flat surfaceā€”sculpture requires mathematical awareness, engineering, and a hands-on understanding of how materials occupy real space.

Maybe for some sculptors, but for me, hand-carving limestone is about being aware of the fragility of the stone and letting the material lead the wayā€”not trying to be too rigid with the form youā€™re trying to achieve. It teaches me patience.
