Up Stairs, our new second gallery space at City Art Depot, is excited to present 'Playground' a new exhibition of paintings by Ashleigh Min.

Opening 5:30–7pm Tuesday 30th June, 96 Disraeli Street, Ōtautahi Christchurch.

Ashleigh Min is an Ōtautahi Christchurch-based artist who explores the vivid yet elusive qualities of dreams through intuitive dreamscape paintings. Often beginning with abstract grounds, she allows forms and images to emerge through a process of painterly discovery, inspired by the natural motifs of her surroundings. Recent developments in her practice have led her to engage with playground imagery and its connections to nostalgia, play and memory.

City Art Depot warmly invites everyone to attend the opening of 'Clutter' by Lisa Patterson, 5.30–7pm Tuesday 30th June 2026 in our gallery at 96 Disraeli Street, Christchurch.

The artworks in ‘Clutter’ continue Patterson’s meticulous crafting of elemental materials, here wood and lead. Patterson is able to see the potential in any ‘scrap’ of material, a new purpose, the inherent aesthetics of it. This potential is explored in her artworks as holding devices and hinged wall hangings, formed from timber cuttings and recycled materials. Polished, carved and reimagined, these artworks make a kind of visual peace with the disorder Patterson sees in their daily home and studio life.

'Clutter' runs 30 June – 27 July 2026 at City Art Depot.

'Sacred to the memory of Itself' is the beginning of a new exploration in Tomkins’ practice. In this exhibition, Tomkins is concerned with disrupting the immediacy of recognition and connotation. The works begin from photographic documentation and are investigated on the canvas. Overwhelmed by the surging saturation of imagery in our contemporary world, Tomkins approaches with a reduced palette. Rather than restricting, this method has allowed him to use light as a tool to investigate the partial and shifting nature of image.

The viscosity of industrial plastisol inks and oil paint mirrors the nature of the subject matter. This collision of materials carries forward a weight that Tomkins aims to capture in the work. His process encourages shape and surface to guide the viewing experience.

By acknowledging memory as a reproduction, Tomkins is interested in why we return to certain moments, events, places and people. Through layering, redacting and rebuilding, the paintings return us to this question.

City Art Reader 91: Francis van Hout – Grey, Red (Getting Older) is now available to read on our website!

Ōtautahi Christchurch-based painter Francis van Hout crafts geometric abstractions with adept sensibilities to paint materiality, colour and surface texture. The initial structural seriousness of these works as viewed on screen or print doesn’t translate the grain, quality of line, warmth and wit within the paintings. Grey, Red (Getting Older) opens 5.30–7pm 26 May and runs through to 22 June 2026. Ahead of this Cameron Ralston joined van Hout in his studio to discuss the new body of work and living with paintings.

Up Stairs at City Art Depot is thrilled to present a new body of work by Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland-based painter Henk Tomkins. Join us for the opening of 'Sacred to the memory of Itself' 5.30–7pm Tuesday 26th May.

Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland-based painter Henk Tomkins' work fuses gestural abstraction with screen printing to explore the complexity of human emotion. His paintings exist in a suspended space between sensation and image, inviting viewers into a dialogue with vulnerability, grief, and connection.
