SMC Art Exhibition & Sculpture Garden The SMC Art Exhibition & Sculpture Garden 2020 takes place on 6-8 November at St Margaret's College, Christchurch.

The SMC Foundation Art Exhibition & Sculpture Garden at St Margaret's College will showcase a wide range of works for sale from artists and sculptors - both established and emerging. Funds raised from this event will go towards providing opportunity for current and future generations of girls. Opening night will be held on Friday 6 November at 6.00 pm - tickets $30 on sale now The Art Exhibition &

Sculpture Garden is open to the public from 9.00am to 4.00pm on Saturday 7 November 2020 and from 10.00am to 3.00pm on Sunday 8 November and is free to attend.

Artist Profile: Rose Rudd is an award-winning artist with soft pastels, of late she has somewhat side tracked into oils and cold wax. Cold wax is a dense paste medium made up of natural beeswax, odourless mineral spirits and a small amount of alkyd resin. Popular worldwide, but reasonably new to NZ, this medium gives oil colours a beautiful translucent quality, making the oil colours thicker and more matte. Layers of colour and texture build up the final result of Rose’s paintings. No brushes are used, and her mark making is later revealed within the many layers by scratching back into the work with a palette knife or razor blade. A number of days are required to build a painting, and this also gives the artist time to reflect and refine her work.

Artist Profile: Mike Glover has his home and studio in Springston South near Lincoln. He has worked as an artist since the mid 1990s developing a recognisable style with his stripped back, vivid, pastel paintings of the South Island’s rivers, lakes and mountainscapes. The deterioration of the Selwyn/Waikirikiri River and Te Waihora/ Lake Ellesmere, near his home, are matters that have informed his work and his life for many years while the braided rivers of the eastern South Island remain an enduring inspiration. Mike has long been involved in community art initiatives and in 2010 won the Selwyn District Council Art and Culture Award for services to the arts in Selwyn.

Matthew Williams started working with timber at a young age, enjoying building furniture and exploring architectural shapes. Whilst studying and working as a model maker, he further expanded his interest in design and construction. English-born Matthew worked in London, Dubai, and Auckland before his move to Christchurch. His artwork has evolved depending on the local materials in each location, utilising regional wood and stone to create contemporary shapes for his sculptures. Learning how to ply bronze and steel has given Matthew a range of mediums with which to mould the strong abstract forms that feature in his work.

Artist Profile: Kara Burrowes is a multimedia artist inspired by the urban landscape. By carefully observing the city scene both on a macro and micro scale, Kara identifies items of interest that could be considered commonplace or disinteresting and reinterprets them into a new dialect of expression. to make sense of the complex landscape, Kara looks for pattern and often painstaking repetition, the resulting artworks are often re-classified into items that are precious and alluring with an emphasis on remnants and reuse.

Artist Profile: Marcia Scott has been painting most of her life, mostly in acrylics but dabbles in water colours and oils too. After studying at art school she has gone on to exhibit in numerous galleries and exhibitions though out New Zealand and has won several awards over those years. Marcia loves the challenges of developing ideas with new mediums… plywood tables and clay cups and bowls to name a few. She has also won awards for wearable arts.

Artist Profile: Philip Beadle was born in 1959 in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand, where he lives and works. “Capturing the light striking a range of subject matter has always interested me whether it is the landscape, n**e or cityscapes. I'm interested in our emotional response to the often fleeting memories we retain of something we have seen and how it affected us. It could be a glare on water or a pose we see for a millisecond as someone moves in everyday life to touch their hair or dry themselves after a swim. I'm also concerned with creating an exciting painting surface with abstract qualities and enjoy painting in warm low evening or winter light to resolve form, colour and light into a warm companion on canvas.”

Artist Profile: Rose McKellar is an award-winning artist from Christchurch who creates feather artworks using natural New Zealand features. Her work typically us depicted in a contemporary take on a Maori cloak design using features such as pheasant, guinea fowl, turkey, peacock, rooster, pukeko, quail and ostrich. Artist Profile: Jane Downes is a full time sculptor/designer working from her workshop in Little River on Banks Peninsula, Canterbury. Her current practice consists of small, medium and large sized indoor and outdoor works made in steel. Her sculptures are constructed from parts plasma cut and formed from sheet steel and profiles, rather than working in the 'full round' enabling her to utilise scrap sheet metal and other discarded materials.
