It’s was an honour to work with Fiona Blanchard to select and award this year’s Small Sculpture national award Presented by Perpetual Guardian in association with the Waiheke Art Gallery and Postage Stamp Wines.
Congratulations to all the finalists. This year the standard of entry was high making my job all the more difficult.
In the words of Pablo Picasso “Sculpture is the art of intelligence” and I agree it’s the unlocking of ideas, shaping, carving and techniques to convey meanings that resonate and keep us coming back for more. My two selections span a traditional
approach and a contemporary one while both are incredibly well executed by each sculptor.
The premier prize was awarded to Gill Gatfield for Tablet, 2026.
Carrara marble, engraved 23ct. gold barcode – unlocks AI-AR sculpture. With the benefactor’s merit prize awarded to Layla Walter for Layla Dahlia #3. Cast glass, rhubarb coloured gaffer glass.
The exhibition is on until 17 May. You can vote for the people’s choice award too.

The Bigger Picture - Forward Thinker. Super to see Philip Trusttum recognised in the Current Listener Magazine with a Double Page spread of The Haka painting as part his Colombo Art Takeover that DMC Art did with “It was effectively the biggest public gallery showing of his storied career. He was clearly too busy to face the photographer. Eyes on what the art needed, always”. RIP Philip who enjoyed rugby plus all sorts of music from rap to classical.
Watch this space a campaign is brewing to secure this for a prominent new public space in Otautahi Christchurch.

We have worked with the global sculptural design and manufacturing expertise of both UAP and Meridian Sculpture to produce the sumptuous high quality, GOLD ROSE SCULPTURE. DMC are delighted to be part of shaping this unique public sculpture opportunity for Elam students launching today.
A chance to create a public sculpture that will be prominently displayed for a year in the gardens of Elam, School of Creative Arts at the University of Auckland is now open to eligible Elam students.

Encouraging Elam students to engage with public sculpture, as well as celebrating creativity, innovation and talent, is the aim of the inaugural Collin Post Sculpture Award and Longveld Plinth Award. The award, includes a fully funded residency at UAP in Brisbane.
