Geography of Loss

Geography of Loss Geography of Loss is a story of resilience, hope, perseverance and homecoming, located firmly in Aotearoa New Zealand. The search for identity affects us all.

Geography of Loss is a new play, written by Karen Zelas, directed by Martin Howells and produced by Lightning Productions. It will play in the Elmwood Auditorium from 15 - 25 October 2014. The script is based on a true story, the lives of 'Deborah' and 'Jack', their extended family and forebears. It is the story of one family, yet, at the same time, of many families from many cultural backgrounds.

A story of upheaval and migration that needs telling over and over. It shows the lasting effects of loss, but also showcases resilience, perseverance, hope and homecoming, and comes to rest firmly in Aotearoa New Zealand, these shaky but beautiful isles. Many people, particularly from Christchurch, will identify with the themes of this play, recognising parallels to the losses and uncertainties in their own lives following the earthquakes. They will also see the same hope and strength that carry them through their adversities to new beginnings. If we look back far enough, all New Zealanders are immigrants. Now as Kiwis we strive to find common ground without losing our unique characters. Geography of Loss is a professional production engaging experienced director, actors and lighting design. The script is innovative, containing many voices. The staging will be sparse and atmospheric, incorporating projected images.

As promised, more photos from Geography of Loss. These are taken by Jo Hayes, the lighting designer.

Geography of Loss
Well, the show is over!! What an experience it has been. Audiences have been most appreciative, the actors and director and crew have loved performing, and the writer is thrilled with the production and the interpretation of the script.

Thanks to those who have been following this page.

Will post more photos in the next few days.

The first review of Geography of Loss is now available:

Geography of Loss is a beautifully rendered cutting-edge production of the loss and internal darkness immigrants have to face on adapting to their new lives. What makes Karen’s play outstanding (so much so that leading NZ writers have already commented it should be going straight to New York) is the poetic language playing riffs on geography and place, shown through clever character placement and movement on stage. I woke up this morning after having seen it last night, its themes of land and loss and hope soaring through me. If you haven’t seen it yet, hurry! - Gail Ingram, President of South Island Writers' Association.

Dress rehearsal tonight. Everything's coming together. Martin Howell's concept is terrific, as is Chris Reddington's installation. Jo Hayes and his lighting and sound people are wonderful.

Martin and Chris debating a point - yes, Chris is tall. Both lovely guys.
