April brought quiet patience, resilience, and stirring up dust every now and then with joyful feet.

It's Autumn now, and change is whispering on my heels.

Happy May 💚

Perhaps, Summer will bring time for painting.

Hi art friends, sharing my beautiful mom's new page, sharing her photos and stories from their lovely wee flock of sheep at Wool be Good at Ochtertyre Farm NZ 😍 She is also selling some lovely wool - her sheep are so treasured, Teddy is a big family favourite as he is such a warm and smoochie big boy who comes running when you call him.

We are stupidly obsessed with the two little hedgehogs that have moved into the garden recently, referred to as Simon & Garfunkel.

They're sweet, healthy, little scamps. Simon is maybe younger and smaller, and Garfunkel is a bit of a dominant personality who hogs the food but is also pretty brave.

Anyway, here's a silly little watercolour of Simon the Hedgehog, happy Saturday!

A little work in progress. Monday feels like light, sunshine, and layered paint.

It was my first day back at work today - nice to see everyone, although already a bit tired.

In other news, I injured a tendon on my thumb just before my surgery in November last year, and I finally got it scanned today. I'm trying to treat it gently and let it heal up. It's pretty sore but manageable. It's not an ideal injury for painting.

Hope your day is a good one.

Happy new year - ngā mihi o te tau hou Pākeha, the start of the Gregorian calendar year. Pictured are some pickings from our Summer garden - I’m so grateful for the garden to harvest from, and nourish our little household.

It’s 2025 and I am full of energy for the year ahead. I started my new year by finally hitting ‘send’ on my submission on the treaty bill currently before parliament.

On January 7th submissions close on the "Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi Bill" and if you haven't yet done so, I do urge you to add your voice in submission to this bill.

My submission was in strong opposition to this bill, which I consider to be reckless, harmful, and greatly at odds with the work done over the last 40 years and more, to understand and uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi as Aotearoa NZ's fundamental constitutional document.

Maybe your views are different to mine - or maybe you feel like you just don't know enough to weigh in. The best thing you can do to understand is to read, learn, intake information, and ask questions. If you want to understand the treaty and its history, I would highly recommend the resources provided by the amazing folks at Network Waitangi Otautahi which you can view here: www.nwo.org.nz on their website. Start with the handbook and work your way through to learn more about things here before the treaty, how this document came to be, and some of the ways its legal status has been clarified and brought into law.

The treaty isn't a threat or a promise of ‘special treatment’ - it is an agreement between the Crown and Māori that ensures a prosperous future for all of us 💚

Don't leave it too late, submissions can be made at: https://www.parliament.nz/en/pb/sc/make-a-submission/document/54SCJUST_SCF_227E6D0B-E632-42EB-CFFE-08DCFEB826C6/principles-of-the-treaty-of-waitangi-bill

Three things:

1/ I'm feeling great! Had surgery on the 27th and all of the pain I've been in since May was immediately gone. Just recovering from the actual surgery itself but feeling good, and have been lucky to have my amazing mum and Danny looking after me.

2/ I'm finally able to get back into my art studio - watch this space 💕

3/ Toitū te tiriti - our constitutional document is not perfect but the attempted erasure of both the status of tangata whenua and the crowns obligation to uphold te tiriti o Waitangi is ludicrous.

That's it from me for now I think.

Love,
MB
