August 25, 1920, Captain Euan Dickson completed the first airplane flight across Cook Strait. Flying a 110-hp Le Rhone Avro 504K for the Canterbury Aviation Company, he traveled from Christchurch to Trentham Racecourse in Upper Hutt, carrying New Zealand's first official inter-island air mail and two passengers.

Either way, it's hard to walk past Illicium majus! Flowers are followed by fruit clusters that resemble star anise but are in fact quite poisonous. True star anise is only produced by its cousin Illicium verum but other species, like this one, can be used for perfume.
