Playing call centre worker Kamila, and understudying the roles of Sahani and Mrs Kapoor, is Tiahli Martyn (Something Rotten!, Beauty and the Beast, One Of Us Is Lying, Little Shop of Horrors, Parade, Aladdin). Tiahli completed a three-year professional Dance and Performing Arts Diploma in the United Kingdom, as well as a BA/BSc at the University of Auckland. Having worked as a swing and understudy before, Tiahli enjoys the mental and physical challenge of developing multiple characters at once. “I am grateful for the opportunity to connect with my fellow South Asian cast mates, as it is not often that you have so many people of colour working on a show at once — that is always special. I’d love to dedicate my understudy work to my Mum and my grandma, both of whom taught me what it means to be a strong South Asian woman, and whom I’ve channelled for my character work on Mrs Kapoor”.

Playing Evelyn (Judi Dench in the movie) is Georgina Monro, a graduate from Toi Whakaari (NZ Drama School) in Wellington, who has worked in professional and community theatre, film and television, including Ian Mune's film The End of the Golden Weather and South Pacific Picture's film We're Here to Help, and various roles in Shortland Street. “This is a delightful opportunity to explore the character of Evelyn, in her twilight years, who begins to emerge 'chrysalis-like' in to a world full of possibility, hope and love - and that life and love can begin again when one lets go of one's past. What a treat it is to be able to share this magical journey along with my fellow 'Marigolds'...!”

Meet the actor with one of the hardest jobs in the cast, understudying the female roles. Yes, if someone gets sick or injured, Kate JasonSmith has to swing into action with a moment’s notice and know all the lines and moves. Kate (Braindead, The Hobbit, Bread and Roses), is the most veteran of all actors in the company, having notched up 55 years’ experience. Her career began in 1969 with the Children's Art Theatre touring company. As a theatre and film practitioner, she has been most recognised throughout her career for her role in establishing and producing Hens' Teeth, a platform for dozens of Kiwi female actors, musicians, and comedians that became a staple of the New Zealand theatre and comedy scene between 1988 to 2001. “What a gig. Understudying four delicious roles in this wonderful play. I really can’t decide which part I like best - Jean, Muriel, Madge or Dorothy - which is good, as I never know which character I might have to play! And having four stunning actors to shadow is certainly a career highlight."

The character brought to life by Dame Maggie Smith, Muriel Donnelly, will be played by Annie Ruth, an industry veteran of 35 years (Shark in the Park 1989, The Strip 2003) and former Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama School director. A prickly, xenophobe. Muriel is a retired cleaner whose council-run retirement home gives her the choice between her grim English environment and a cheaper establishment in India. Once there all her certainties are challenged and Muriel is transformed. “I feel delighted and privileged to be a part of this gorgeous production, working alongside an extraordinary group of artists, both on stage and behind the scenes. It’s a joyous, life-affirming play and that makes for a terrific work environment and, I feel sure, a terrific experience for our audiences."

Meet the actor playing Douglas (Bill Nighy in the movie) -- Edward Newborn (The Water Horse, 'Sergeant', The Brokenwood Mysteries ‘Wally’, Go Girls, Shortland Street, Xena: Warrior Princess, Hercules) whose career began some 31 years ago with the short drama Martha. Douglas and his pessimistic wife Jean (Helen Moulder) have sunk their life savings into their daughter’s failing start-up. Jean’s refusal to leave the hotel once they arrive, and her rejection of all things Indian while her husband happily explores the nearby temples, precipitate an inevitable explosion. “This is my second production for Stetson Productions, the first being “The Original Phantom of the Opera” which I performed twice in Tokyo. I am thrilled to be working for them again with such a wonderful cast in a truly human and heart-warming play. Sit back and enjoy the show.”
