03 Sessions

15/10/2026

It’s with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Darren Pickering this week. Darren was a huge figure in 03 Sessions from the very beginning, performing many times over the years in a variety of groups, as well as leading his own project ‘Darren Pickering Small Worlds’. His loss will be felt deeply by our music community, as it will be by the many who listened to his music, studied with him, performed alongside him, and knew him as a friend. We were indeed very lucky to have him. RIP Darren Pickering

That’s his big band in the video. On Thursday it’s four of them, right here.

Ōtautahi, meet Bernard van Rossum - a Spanish-Dutch tenor player touring Australia and New Zealand. He leads the award-winning BvR Flamenco Big Band, three albums deep, with Antonio Serrano and Carles Benavent among the guests along the way.

He’s visiting Ōtautahi Christchurch for the first time, and stripping it back to a quartet with Nick Pitts on piano, Luke Belcher on double bass and Cameron Finlay on drums.

THIS Thursday 27 August, Space Academy, 371 St Asaph St. 8pm.

$20 - $30 tickets, link in bio.
