It is with the heaviest of hearts ever that we share with you the sudden passing of our most beloved Dexter.
Found roaming the streets of Te Awamutu by the Pound. Dianna happened to know the employee who discovered him. A passing comment about a dog needing a home, a picture of him, and a quick discussion about “*just* going to see a puppy” that left me knowing we’d need to buy dog food on the way to this chance encounter.
Dexter came to us needing a good feed; a bit malnourished, but still glowing with immense Spirit. I was quite shattered at the time, having spent several years working through a massive Nigredo; a deep dark night of the soul that kept on casting pitch black at me, devoid of mercy. Then, the light emerged…
Twelve years and two months. It seems like a long time, but it went so quickly.
Dexter could light up any room; his love was immense, his handsomeness just as stunning. Every dog owner probably says this, but I say this because wherever he went people went out of their way to say something about him. He had a paw-curated top shelf of humans that unlocked in him an entirely unique level of joy and song and dance and slobbery-silliness. You know who you are. Those of you that he’d drag me directly to on our walks from four blocks away, just to say hi and spread the Love.
This past year has been wrought with loss, and it feels like life is shrinking. The Void left where I once had the privilege of being surrounded by this incredible being that came to us and transformed our lives, is at present moment unbearable.
The clock just now turned 4:44pm ~ the exact time of his passing yesterday. This cosmic master of unconditional love returned to Source. Though his passing came out of nowhere, we made sure to fill each and every one of his days with a wholesome blend of adventure, long walks in nature, copious amounts of all-weather swimming and surfing, road trips to new places, mountains to climb, visits to his favorite humans, whispers into his gorgeous felty ears about how much we loved him and what he meant to us, workdays spent sitting poised on his perch in our grassy parking lot area guarding the back door to our studio, delicious food, lazy days in cozy oversized bean bags …at home, which was his absolute favorite place to be…apart perhaps from the Fish Van where he was given a choice fillet of fresh fish every week. His favorite nook in winter was his dedicated spot on our patio couch, under the heater that he designed his very own battery-free remote for.
We cherish forever in our hearts the memories shared and the lessons he taught us. I’ve never wept this much in my life. I’ve felt a few times like my heart might just give out.
Thank you my most loyal and loving friend. We will ALWAYS keep you alive right here 👉❤️ where you touched us the most!
