🌊 Wellington residents have been cleared to return home after massive 11m swells and wild winds battered the capital’s south coast.

Hundreds evacuated as emergency warnings were issued, with gusts reaching nearly 100km/h in Wellington and 137km/h on the East Coast. While many locals described the conditions as “really scary,” others praised authorities for putting safety first.

Roads, beaches, and coastal communities were hit hard, but officials say the worst has now passed — though residents are still being warned to stay alert around high tide. 🇳🇿🌧️

Police say she survived four cold nights outdoors and is now recovering in hospital. ❤️🇳🇿

🚓 Another NZ police officer has undergone an employment process after “abnormal” alcohol breath tests were detected earlier this year.

Police say the issue was uncovered by a monitoring algorithm introduced after the nationwide breath-testing scandal involving more than 42,000 irregular tests. Authorities say most officers are acting with integrity, and they’re confident improper in-motion testing has largely stopped.

Meanwhile, NZTA has restored millions in road policing funding after reviewing the investigation outcomes. 🇳🇿

🌊 Wellington’s massive swell warnings have sparked debate, with some south coast residents calling the emergency response an overreaction after major damage failed to eventuate.

Hundreds were evacuated and a local state of emergency was declared as waves up to 10m were forecast to hit the coastline. While some locals and businesses say the disruption and closures were unnecessary, others praised authorities for putting safety first after lessons learned from previous destructive storms.

Wellington Mayor Andrew Little defended the decision, saying officials acted on expert forecasts and evidence to protect lives and property. Meanwhile, Wairarapa appears to have escaped with only minor debris and road clean-ups needed. 🇳🇿🌧️

🔐 SIS says it has changed significantly since the 2019 Christchurch mosque attacks, but admits it is “not all seeing and all knowing”.

The comments follow renewed discussion about lessons learned from the March 15 terror attack, where 51 worshippers were killed at Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Centre in Christchurch.

Officials say New Zealand’s intelligence system has improved with stronger online monitoring, better cooperation with Police, and increased resources. However, they stress it is not possible to track everything happening online in a free society.

Former ministers and experts say agencies have become more capable since the attack, but some argue there are still lessons to be fully addressed about how threats are identified and acted on earlier.

The Royal Commission previously found there was no realistic way to fully predict the attack, though debate continues around whether warning signs were missed. ⚖️

⚖️ Whanganui court has sentenced Shannan Taylor to a total of 22 years in prison after being found guilty of multiple serious sexual offences.

The High Court heard he r***d two women, including one while she was recovering after giving birth with her newborn nearby. The offending formed part of a wider pattern of sexual violence over time.

Justice Christine Grice described the behaviour as a “serious and persistent pattern of sexual offending”, noting the significant and lasting harm caused to victims.

Taylor, already serving time for earlier sexual offending, will be eligible for parole after serving one-third of his combined sentence. Police say his history shows an ongoing risk, but rehabilitation opportunities remain.

🚨 Authorities emphasise victim support services are available for anyone affected.

The school confirmed everyone is safe, while police are now investigating the unexplained cause of the fire and are asking for any CCTV or dashcam footage from the area. 🚓

🌊 Powerful storm swells and fierce winds have battered the Wairarapa coast, with Ngawi residents reporting “humongous” waves smashing into the bay and boat landings. 💨

Wind gusts reached a massive 137km/h at Cape Turnagain, while debris and heavy surf forced the closure of Cape Palliser Road. Residents were urged to stay safe as dangerous conditions hit the region. 🚨

Flights, ferries and coastal travel have also been disrupted across lower North Island areas.

🔥 An Auckland fire-safety company director has been sentenced after forging compliance documents linked to a building project on the North Shore.

Neil Gould, sole director of Parallel Fire Protection Ltd, admitted creating a false verification certificate for a fire hydrant system so it could be used in a Code Compliance Certificate application.

The fraud was uncovered after Auckland Council raised concerns in 2024, prompting a Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) investigation.

Authorities found the certificate included falsified details of an independent inspector. Gould has been sentenced to three months’ community detention and ordered to pay $1,000 in reparations. ⚖️

MBIE says fire safety systems must be independently certified and is reminding the industry to report any compliance concerns.

✅ Wellington’s south coast state of emergency has now been lifted after fears of destructive 11-metre waves eased. 🌊

Mayor Andrew Little said the massive swells were not hitting the coastline as hard as first predicted, allowing evacuated residents and businesses to safely return home. 🚨

Roads are reopening, but people are still being urged to stay careful tonight as high tides and debris remain possible along the coast. 💨
