Last night at the Aotea Centre, the Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi created eight new Laureates including treasured Auckland Theatre Company collaborator Anapela Polata'ivao ONZM (Sāmoa: Faleata, Vaiusu, Fagae'e Safune), who was awarded the Sir Roger Hall Theatre Award gifted by Lady Dayle Mace.

Multi-award winning Anapela has a long and distinguished career as an actor, producer, writer and director. Sāmoan born, Anapela has been the inspiration, teacher and mentor for a generation of Pacifika theatre makers who are now shining across our stages and screens. Anapela is a genuinely inspirational artist and human being, possessed of a determination to lay a better path for those who follow and champion the highest standards of craft.

Mainstage productions Anapela has created for ATC include Things That Matter by Gary Henderson, Red, White and Brass adapted for the stage by Leki Jackson-Bourke and Sons of Vao by Vela Manusaute. Anapela will direct the world premiere of The Boy from Vaiala by Victor Rodger in our 2027 season.

We salute Anapela for her body of work; it is a privilege to be her collaborator.

What a week! 💥 On Monday we pulled back the curtain on our 2027 Season at the ASB Waterfront Theatre. It was great to share this announcement moment with our patrons, subscribers, supporters and artists. We loved feeling the buzz in the room.

So much work went into the event and into shaping the year ahead. Countless hands made this possible. It’s a VERY big list, so to everyone who played a part: thank you, you’re brilliant.

We can't wait for the theatrical magic that's coming next year. Here’s to 2027! 🎭
