Reel Wild: The Kiwi Trail Running Film Fest

Reel Wild: The Kiwi Trail Running Film Fest Reel Wild is New Zealand’s first film festival solely dedicated to trail running.

The idea is to create the laid back atmosphere of the post-run catch up with friends: get together with like-minded individuals, watch some amazing trail running films, drink some mighty fine beer, eat something delicious, and share the love for the sport in a relaxed manner. To check the full event programme and all the films showcased, as well as to book tickets, visit: http://www.reelwild.co.nz

Ah Anton, Anton...always a hero in our house. He may not be racing anymore but his adventuring is always inspiring. Good interview from Wild Ginger Films asking Anton about how to prep for 100 Mile races...not that one of us is sweating a lot terrified with our first 100miler on the horizon....

A 100mile race wasn't on my to do list, but after hearing this advice from top US trail runner Anton Krupicka, I am now tempted! Are you? 8 fantastic tips he...

Kilian Jornet and Emelie Forsberg's idea of "downtime between seasons" sure is different to ours. This fun little short movie released last week and shows the couple attempting an 8000m ascent in Nepal in 10 days - the ultimate fastpacking experience!

In case you missed this mini movie last week it is well worth checking out. Kilian Jornet and Emelie Forsberg in downtime between seasons see if they can summit 8000 metres without oxygen and express acclimatization in Nepal. Crazy adventure and takes fast packing to a new level! Check it out here

The ginger bearded legend that is Shaun Collins pulled off the Trillary last weekend - an astounding Triple Hillary. That's 228km, 11,100m of elevation and, just quietly, one of the biggest accomplishments in New Zealand Trail Running history.

One completion of this trail along would floor most runners so an amazing achievement by one of the larger than life and wonderful characters of the running community in NZ. Serious props to you Shaun. Shaun's been a huge supporter of us and we can't wait to shout him a beer to say congrats!

Good excuse to revisit a film we have shown at previous Reel Wild editions, the movie of Shaun's incredible The Hillary Trail Run/Walk (16, 34 & 80km & maybe 100km ) at Reel Wild. Here's some of the incredible scenery Shaun got to see and then see again and then see again: http://reelwildfilmfest.com/films/the-hillary-2016/

***Inspiration for your Tuesday evening viewing pleasure***

Homeless people, addicts, people coming out of prison... these are the Skid Row runners. Craig Mitchell, a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge, leads the long-distance runners' club out of the Midnight Mission on Skid Row. When everyone had given up on these men, this judge found a way to give them hope. That way was through running.

We have been eargerly awaiting the release of this excellent documentary made from years of following a group of Skid Row runners. It is a visual testament to the power of the marathon and shows how, one step at a time, running can truly change lives, even the ones we thought lost.

Choosing the films to show at each Reel Wild Film Festival is a near-impossible task as we sit through hours and hours of incredible footage that we simply do not have the time to show (but don't worry, we have beer so we cope). It's always bugged us that some of these don't get the giant screen treatment they deserve and only a Reel Wild every weekend could solve that (but then when would we actually run?!). For that reason, we've started compiling the best trail running movie list out there (as well as our write ups on every movie we've ever shown at a Reel Wild event). In between working on the next edition of Reel Wild (btw, details tbc, tbh), we will keep updating the online library, for those lazy Sunday afternoons when you need to put your feet up after your long run or for whenever you're struggling and need a little bit of inspiration to get out there. Let's kick this listing off with this excellent new short starring Joe Grant - Alpine Works - a must see!
