🍕🍺 Happy International B**r and Pizza Day!

Every year on 9 October, pizza and b**r get their own day - celebrating one of the world’s most classic food pairings.

International B**r and Pizza Day was created in 2016 by American b**r and pizza enthusiast Nick Saulino, with a simple idea: bring people together over good pizza and a cold b**r.

And there’s a reason the pairing works so well. The crispness of b**r cuts through rich, cheesy toppings, while different b**r styles can complement everything from a classic Margherita to spicy or meaty pizzas.

If you're celebrating in Mission Bay, there are plenty of places to start:
Mission Bay Taproom - pizza and b**r in a relaxed waterfront setting

Ever wondered how Mission Bay got its name?

Long before the cafés, restaurants and busy summer beach we know today, Mission Bay was home to something very different.

The name comes from the Melanesian Mission, established here by Anglican Bishop George Augustus Selwyn in the late 1840s. Also known as St Andrew’s College, it provided Christian education for boys from Melanesian islands across the Pacific.

And a piece of that history is still standing today.

The Melanesian Mission building, built in 1859 from basalt quarried on Rangitoto Island, once housed the college dining hall, kitchen and storehouse. It was originally part of a much larger complex that included a church and schoolhouse.

The mission moved to Norfolk Island in 1867, but the building remains more than 165 years later, a reminder of where the name Mission Bay began.
