There is something rather special about the way Gilly Sheffield - artist, weaver and sculptor works with places 💫
For our group show Neighbourhood, Gilly brings together a collection of her distinctive crosses, made from iron rescued from our local neighbourhood or as she puts it “rescued from the Neighbourhood for the Neighbourhood”. Using Macramé techniques, Gilly weaves the iron with marine cord, waxed cord, and galvanised braided utility wire, creating pieces that feel both grounded and delicate.
There is a beautiful tension in Gilly’s work between strength and history of the iron and the intricate and delicate nature of the weaving. Each piece speaks to a place in its own way, transforming something once overlooked into something considered and full of character 💚
With the iron rescued locally and reimagined through handwoven forms, these crosses feel especially at home within Neighbourhood, a collection shaped by place, people, and the stories held within them.
We are delighted that 14 of Gilly’s crosses will be part of our Neighbourhood show, alongside all the wonderful artists and stories that make up Neighbourhood belinda Harriet Millar josh lancaster Judith Milner & Kylie Rusk Art
