Melissa and Dean have both had a longtime love of art, with their first date spent wandering around art galleries. After Melissa studied art throughout school and Dean having always been a talented creator, they met while studying Graphic Design and have worked together since. After owning a design agency for over 20 years, in late 2018 they saw an opportunity for a change in direction, and Turua

Gallery was born. Whether you’re looking for a special piece for your home, bach, as a gift, or maybe you’d just like to look around; Turua Gallery is a relaxed space where everyone is welcome. It has been many years since a gallery has graced the village of St Heliers and Turua Gallery is quickly becoming the place for locals to get their art fix. There is a beautiful ever changing collection of work by emerging and celebrated New Zealand artists. They host solo exhibitions where you can enjoy opening night fun with some nibbles and bubbles, as well as hosting group shows. Melissa and Dean have lived in St Heliers for many years, with their now adult daughters Ruby and Lucy, who many of you will have met at opening nights. Dean has continued to paint, draw and create, regularly selling his pieces through the gallery. Melissa takes real joy in finding works that are special to each person, often sourcing pieces directly from artists, arranging people to view pieces at home and organising commissions. If you find yourself in St Heliers, pop in, they’d love to see you.

Just arrived in the gallery, we are loving these two larger than life new still-life works from l ✨She is inspired by moments that remind her to appreciate the peaceful, impermanent present.

“I paint roses because they make me happy because I want to capture that moment. Often the essence rather than the exact photographic representation. The last days of Autumn, “Yellow roses” in a white vase sitting on a table at our home in Poukawa 2026.”

Also new in the gallery is “End of Summer” with lovely dusky pink roses and both works are 750mm x 750mm, can be viewed in the gallery or only online gallery 💫

We are thrilled to invite you to the opening of “Kindred” on Friday 12th June a vibrant new joint exhibition with Alicia Beech and Helen Dean 🌺

“Kindred” pairs expressive, gestural abstraction with .artist intricate, nature-inspired floral works — a dynamic contrast that delivers both harmony and tension. Together, their work offers a rich interplay of movement and precision, colour and form, capturing a sense of joy and light during the winter months 🩷

At the heart of the exhibition is a shared exploration of how different visual languages can emerge from similar foundations.

Alicia’s work draws directly from her garden and surrounding landscape, where observation meets imagination. Inspired by ever-changing seasonal blooms, her paintings reimagine natural environments through layered colour, rhythm and movement ✨

Helen’s practice explores abstraction through a restrained and intentional lens. Working within a limited palette of magenta, yellow, black and white, her paintings shift between vibrancy and quiet restraint, with layered marks and forms that blur boundaries between control and spontaneity 💫

“Kindred is a beautiful meeting of two artists whose practices speak to each other in unexpected ways, there’s a real sense of harmony and contrast in the work that makes it incredibly engaging — it’s full of colour, movement and joy, which feels especially wonderful for a winter show.

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of sitting down with in her home and chatting with her all about the longevity of her much loved art career, what drives and obsession with vintage finds 💕

The full email is being sent to our subscribers tomorrow, but we have treated you to some snippets here.

Jody - a question is about this collection. So usually when an artist is having a solo show, it is all new work & I have been really excited about this upcoming show. Like some of the works I have spotted and fallen in love with today are from 2005. Are you looking forward to walking into the gallery when it is all hung and seeing all your treasured pieces and babies on the walls, but looking at the in quite a different way to you have ever seen them, hung in a collection that represents your career thus far?

“You’re just excited to walk around my house and studio and steel all my favourites!! I think it will be really quite exciting, but I am also nervous. It might be a bit sad, a bit tough, to let some of these pieces go. Many have bene in my home and studio and for years, and have been a part of my day to day”

I am a bit worried I am going to call and say some pieces have sold and you will get anxiety you won’t see them again…..

“Yeah, so am I hahaha. Yeah, these are my favourites.”
