When we first encountered Camo in Jack Valentine’s Devonport studio, the painting was oriented vertically. Here at the gallery, it hangs in landscape.
There’s something fitting about this shift in perspective. In FUN BAD TIME, Jack imagines a world in which familiar visual conventions are turned on their heads, borrowing from the narrative language of comics to construct scenes that are at once absurd, theatrical and strangely familiar.
The change in orientation feels particularly apt for a body of work so concerned with the instability of images and the stories we construct around them. What happens when a painting refuses a single, fixed way of being seen?
