Y'all asked for a sharing space, and we're here to deliver 🫡

Our slam season is just around the corner with regionals coming up in a month (watch this space 👀), so we're running it back to basics beforehand! Whether you're looking to get your reps in for regionals or if you're just keen to share some poetry, this open mic is the place to be!

Meet your facilitators! 🐲🎧

Jesse Gibson (COCOSHAKIM) is a South Auckland multidisciplinary creative working across spoken word, film, music, and community arts. His practice centres storytelling, identity, and connection, with a strong grounding in Pacific community values. With experience in facilitation through the Spoken Word Navigators programme and a background in public-facing creative work, Jesse brings a community-driven approach to creating open, engaging spaces for dialogue and expression.

Luani Nansen (Nualan) is a South Auckland DJ, spoken word poet, and youth worker whose practice blends music, storytelling, and community connection. With years of experience mentoring young poets and facilitating programmes across organisations like Action Education, Tekaranga Trust, and 09 Poetry Slam, Luani brings a strong grounding in creative facilitation. Their work centres on uplifting community voices and creating spaces for open, meaningful dialogue.

And what a treat we have for ya’ll to celebrate! Cocoshakim and our very own Nūalān will be hosting a Creative Writing workshop in a few weeks at The 09 💚

If you’re keen to write a poem or verse, learn more about spoken word, maybe even prepare for regionals in a few months 👀 this is the place for you!

Bring an old piece if you’re keen to edit, maybe something new you want help fleshing out ideas for or just come hang with some cool people and artists.

THANK YOU 💚

What an unbelievable night and turn out! Thank you for showing up for our baddies aka. Ruby and Koromiko to help fundraise for them to head off to BANFF this month. It’s an evolving goal of ours to support our communities and artists so this was huge for us and we are extremely proud and grateful to have had a part to play in their artistic journeys. Special shoutout to those who donated via. bank transfer because you couldn’t make it, your contributions were received with all the love 🙏🏽

Thank you to our friends at SMALL RAVE for ensuring the space is warm in the winter and to our talented photographer Isoa for capturing these precious moments.

We want to wish Miko and Ruby a safe and cup filling trip! We are excited to see what you both create and await eagerly to hear all about it 💐 Drop a comment below with some well wishes!

2/2 BADDIES TO BANFF ⭐️

Ruby Macomber will be your second feature of the night! We asked Ruby about BANFF and why it is important to her:

“Banff is an opportunity of a lifetime. An opportunity I do not take lightly, but with so much love for those who made me believe it was possible. The Story Sharing Residency 2.0 2026 is an indigenous-specific opportunity for exchange, critical discourse and creative development. It is a precious opportunity to stretch the localised lens through which I have so far written my current collection and interrogate the ways in which we share embodiment experiences of abolition with our indigenous whānaunga around the world.

I am excited and grateful for the rare opportunity to meet, connect and collaborate with indigenous artists across the globe—to share in pūrākau, solidarity and stories. I haven’t been a part of much ‘formal arts training’ before, and so I am beyond excited to be challenged artistically and grow—grow both as an artist, but also in my capacity to serve as a facilitator, curator and community member. I’m excited to share learningd through future facilitation and organising mahi in Aotearoa and Te Moana-nui-a Kiwa.“

The 09 are proud to support Ruby and see her off to Canada next month and we want you there this week to both celebrate and fundraise!

1/2 OF THE BANFF BADDIES 💚

Koromiko Jacob-Williams is half of the wāhine toa heading over to Canada for BANFF next month and we are proud to help with the Baddies to BANFF fundraiser next week.

We asked Miko, why now? Why BANFF?

“We have been given the amazing opportunity to attend a Story Sharing/Indigenous Arts Residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Canada next month! During this 3-week residency, we will have the opportunity to develop our craft and work on creative projects with the assistance of faculty and mentors. Nā māua te waimarie ki te tūtaki i tēnei kaupapa whakahirahira! We are blessed to have this chance to deepen our creative process and share Te Ao Māori in a space that supports indigenous storytelling. I am going on this haerenga to work on my spoken word poetry and screenwriting, with a focus on being a rangatahi wāhine and urban Māori who has found voice through poetry. I applied for this kaupapa in the hopes that I could connect with a wider web of indigenous creatives and to have time to ground my mahi and practice. I’m looking forward to sharing some of Te Ao Māori with the wider world! And to write, write, write, and write. Nāku te whiwhi!! I feel blessed to have this opportunity to share and connect and feel so grateful for this blessing. Ko te tumanako ka whakapakari ahau i āku āheinga ki ngā mahi toi.”

WE’RE GOING TO CANADA ✈️

Well, The 09 isn’t but Ruby Macomber and Koromiko Jacob-Williams are and we are proud to support them on this journey!

The 09 Poetry Slam is proud to announce our next event is a fundraiser for Ruby and Miko to attend BANFF in Canada, a three week indigenous writers residency.

There will be an open mic, special guest performers, merch and more!
