From first throes, seated in the back row of a dimly lit and intimate theater, we are drawn into the tragycomedy of Leilani (Irasa Siave), a naive but incredibly loveable heroine, who shares her journey from the onset – the consequences of an unrewarding love, to being down on her luck and cas...

The atmosphere was electric as Oliver Smith and I found our seats in ‘The Loft’ at Q Theatre. We were there to watch the world premiere of Mahuika Theatre Company’s, debut production – Leilani.

Only 5 more chances to see this poignant work of theatre! Book you tickets here http://bit.ly/23f7gYc and read this awesome review by Genevieve McClean from The Daily Blog

"In Leilani Mahuika do not fail to deliver a poignant well told story and the magic of mask is there with many moments that deliver brilliance from the angle of a chin, the glint of an eye or the posturing that accompany a sassy delivery."

Mahuika step onstage as a fledgling theatre company and take their first bow to rapturous applause from a delighted audience. It’s 2016 and homelessness in New Zealand sits at record levels. An approximation puts the total of New Zealanders on the street at 40, 000.* It is late winter, and we’ve jus...

"The considerable heart and soul of Leilani lies in the truth of its characters."

http://www.theatreview.org.nz/reviews/review.php?id=9439

The atmosphere feels energised and optimistic as the capacity audience settles for this world premiere of emergent theatre company Mahuika's debut production. Overall the optimism is fully justified; artistic director Pedro Ilgenfritz honors the historic occasion with a short introductory speech an...

Leilani deals with family, poverty and homelessness. Maori Television came to see our final dress rehearsal and spoke to Pedro and Aymee about these issues we are facing in Aotearoa. "...We don't feel really comfortable talking about that, it destroys certain discourses, and it's tabu. We don't like thinking about our own people sleeping in cars, or not having a place to go.”

Leilani is on now until Aug 13 at Q Theatre. Book your tickets here http://bit.ly/23f7gYc or call Q Box Office on 09 309 9771

We open tonight at Q theatre and what better way to start the day than an interview on Niu FM!

Pleasure to have Samoan actress Irasa Siave in the studio this morning to talk about 'Leilani'. A brand new show that kicks off tonight at Auckland's Q theatre.

Sweet, young Leilani has the best news to share and life is great, until she is left heartbroken and discarded by the people who are supposed to love her most. Junior dumps her, the less-than-lovely Aroha kicks her out and rumours about her spread. Homeless, friendless and expecting. What will Leilani do? Where will she go? Leilani encounters the kiwi characters that inhabit our world - from the Queen of K Rd to the city’s homeless to the young urban capitalist. Leilani searches for home, amongst familiar faces, in the most unlikely of places.
