A word from Shane Bosher, director of Brilliant Adventures:
Tonight marks the end of my six year journey with EVERY KIND OF WEATHER.
And a journey it has been. Developed in the first lockdown but then side-swiped by the Delta variant in 2021, we managed to squeeze in a few regional festival presentations before finally being able to share the full productions in Te Whanganui-a-Tara and Tāmaki Makaurau over the last year with the support of Circa Theatre and Q Theatre.
To the audiences who showed up to live inside language; to Belinda Robinson and the Bruce Mason Estate, to Caroline Armstrong, Phil Evans and their teams; to Michelle Lafferty, Aliarnya Nicoll van Leeuwen and Steph Butler at Elephant Publicity; to Murray Lynch and Playmarket; to the many industry allies who supported us; to Niamh Campbell-Ward, Natasha Thyne and John Verryt; and finally, to our next-level designers Jane Hakaraia, Sean Lynch and Paul McLaney, I want to say thank you.
But most especially, I want to celebrate two extraordinary human beings. Firstly, Bruce Mason: it was a been a career privilege to celebrate your words, your world, your legacy. And to Stephen Lovatt, who has been beside me through every stage of this project, and every kind of weather. Thank you for sharing your extraordinary talent, your wisdom, your wit, your world. I am forever grateful.
I'll leave it to Bruce himself to have the final word:
"What’s left is the occasions when you have this marvellous rapport with an audience, when you and they cease to have any sort of boundary, when you are communicating in a way that makes you one continuum, that was where it worked. And it was wonderful when it happened.
I look for it in various places, and of course, occasionally find it, and I wish I could say, the Christmas scene in The End of the Golden Weather, has that celebratory quality of a golden time. And I suppose this is what makes my friends and colleagues say I’m a romantic artist; one looks for this golden possibility. And I look for it here, I must say, until this day.
The search is valuable. The search itself. That’s the great value of it. One may not strike gold, but somehow the route to it is paved with something like gold."
