VELVET - THE NIGHT OF SUMPTUOUS DECADENCE

1999 was the year two brothers from other mothers [Trav & Ferk] randomly met (at a bar) and discovered they both loved house & garage music. At the time House music was at it's peak in NZ and all that could be heard @ clubs was the various forms of House music.

🤩 We decided to have a party for 150 close friends. A venue was found, a wine bar on Kr'd called Wagamamas and`PEACH' was underway! Yes, Peach! Complete with a hand-drawn flier idea emulating the centerpiece Michael Angelo's Sistine Chapel with `Adam' clad in lingerie!

[I'm not too sure what we were thinking at that time]

During a site visit to the venue, we were rummaging around in the basement where the stored resturant stocks & a large pile of smelly rubbish bags. We were thinking about how we could extend the party & add a second room and there sat a plush velveteen purple couch.

📌BOOM! We had a new name. "Velvet!" & a second room in the basement (after giving it a new paint job of velvety red)

💃 With Soane (RIP brother), & a couple of DJ mates we shared the turntables "dropping the phattest, funkiest, discoish house & garage" - It absolutely went off!

💃It wasn't just the music, it was the vibe from groups of friends celebrating togeather. Friends would get ready together at someones place, music blasting, wine being poured [preloading] & the whole pre event was part of the fun until someone finally corralled the group into a taxi & off they went to party together!

People were raving about it! Friends told their friends & they told their friends & soon it quickly grew too 7 rooms and 2000+ people at the mighty Civic.

🔥There are so many memories but I remember when an incredible young DJ by the name of Philippa had the crowd euphoric, it was so hot that night so we opened up the fold out doors to let air in & people spilled out on to K'rd.

🔥1 am crowds passing by joined in & danced in the middle of K road, stopping traffic, more randoms joined in and people began dancing on parked cars!

💋 On November 30th, 2019 we celebrate 20 years since that beginning. Most of us had kids, some moved on, some passed, some still remembered but most of us got trapped in repetitive rut of life with a few gray hairs poking out

BUT for one night get a crew togeather and come join us -

❤️ We celebrate the friendships made and adventures we went on.

❤️ We also celebrate in loving memory the beautiful people who were a very big part of this who we have now lost: Glenn, Darryl, Soane, Stu, and Derek.
