What does this mean??

Auckland Choral is producing and performing Benjamin Britten's War Requiem on Sunday 11 October, in the Auckland Hall.

2026 marks an anniversary, 50 years since Britten's death...
It is a year when 12 great musical organisations across the globe are commemorating him and this amazing piece by performing the work!

We're so excited to be part of this global movement!

One is at Coventry Cathedral itself! (In November, already sold out) The site of the premiere and whose consecration was the reason the work was commissioned!

A work written for another era, but very much relevant to our current times.

Britten’s War Requiem is profoundly moving. A lifelong pacifist, Britten aimed to articulate his horror and grief at the losses caused by two world wars. But he also hoped for some kind of unity.

When it comes to something as massive and epic as Britten's War Requiem it takes moments of the team pulling it apart - looking under the cover, going through the finer points and details.... creating a lived experience of the music together!!
Last week it was the turn of the tenors and basses from Auckland Choral and the Auckland Youth Choir.... this time it was the sopranos and altos...
It's hard to explain how mesmerising it is to sit back and listen to the sounds build and unfold....
So you'll just have to come and hear it for yourself!

It's not often one gets to do something epic!
Britten's War Requiem... last performed in Auckland in 2013 and prior to that 1975!! Now on October 11, 2026! But ... what is the War Requiem about, and what's our take on it?

Britten mixes traditional Latin text for the Mass for the Dead, with the anti-war poems of Wilfred Owen, a young solider in WW1...

To us though, it's less about war and more about people. About the connections between people. It's about stories and being good humans to each other.

It's about the people performing it in October, it's about the people who have come before us - those who have performed it before us, but also the people who have been lost and who have lived through wars (then and now). It's about the stories of the soldiers in the poems, on two sides of a war, meeting... It's about the audience who will be part of this experience... and it's about the people who will follow us.

We hope you will be there. It will be nothing short of epic, and history making!

So who's joining us!!! For Britten's War Requiem - Sunday 11 October, 5pm, Auckland Town Hall!

Obviously all you wonderful people in our audience....

But we are also so very excited to have these people and musical organisations performing with us!

Morag Atchison - soprano. One of New Zealand's leading sopranos. She performed the work in Wellington in 2024... one reviewer (in Middle C) stated her "singing was to die for"....

Stegall - tenor. We very much welcome American born, Australian based singer Kyle, a versatile artist in demand with leading orchestras, opera companies and festivals on tenor.

James G A Harrison - Baritone. Auckland Choral's very own Associate Chorus Master takes up the baritone role. It will be such a privilege to have him front of stage.

Auckland Youth Choir with David Squire, Claire Caldwell with Hani Lui

And Westlake Girls High School. Wilson.

And an orchestra cast of nearly 100 across 2 orchestras. (More on them coming up).

Of course all of these amazing people, and this awe-inspiring work is under the baton of Auckland Choral's Music Director Uwe Grodd

Remember, not seen in Auckland since 2013! You must be there!

What happens? Benjamin Britten's War Requiem!

For 3 soloists, 3 choirs and 2 orchestras ... nearly 300 people on stage!

Written to mark the 1962 consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral, which was rebuilt after a 1940 World War II bombing raid destroyed the medieval structure. As a lifelong pacifist, Britten used the commission to create a powerful anti-war statement.

So you MUST come! You must be there!
Who knows when it will next be performed!

War Requiem is one of those works that often leaves a profound impression on both performers and audiences. Unlike many large choral works, it doesn’t simply inspire awe—it invites reflection on war, loss, reconciliation, and hope.

A snippet from the premiere in 1962...
"At the end of the performance, no applause was allowed: Britten had instructed the audience to remain silent. There was a “deathly silence” and many singers and players were visibly shaken....

Auckland Choral’s Tribute to Robert Wiremu

The members of Auckland Choral and their alumni join in sorrow with the choral communities of Aotearoa New Zealand at the passing of Robert Wiremu.

Many have listed the multitude of ways Robert contributed to the growth of choral music. We celebrate that immense contribution that has had such wide-reaching effects.

As a choir we count it a privilege to have had him share his knowledge and expertise with us, which he always did with such a gracious manner.

He was a soloist with the choir and guest vocal coach on several occasions as well as being our rehearsal accompanist for a while.

Many individuals in the choir have special memories of times they met with him and worked with him. He was unique, exceptionally talented and inspirational and we feel his loss deeply.
