This was a study for a larger group of works I am keen to start..... fascinated by the role lichens play in our ecosystem and the many benefits both to ourselves and the surrounding environment I have been keen to explore and create this surreal world....the idea is in it's infancy but I'm interested to see where it will lead me....that and working on this small piece with bigger brushes has led to a big order of larger brushes of my favourite eclipse long filberts!
I reach for those the most and they are a dream for alla prima painting too.

This is currently on show

I started painting these small alla prima landscape studies late last year, it wasn't because I enjoyed them, in fact it was the opposite!
I had simply started these studies as a way to help push me and inform my practice, sharpen my skills and give me room to play with different techniques, loosen up and not rely heavily on my reference material.
What I didn't expect was that I would actually start to enjoy painting them.

Although I don't see huge landscape paintings as being the primary focal point of my paintings, I can see how they have already helped inform my primary practice so for now I see many more little landscape studies for 2026.

Some recent studies I had on show in our last exhibition. Painted on board Mike cut down for me into small 12x16 and 15x20cm sizes.
I have found them great for small quick studies to capture local views and of course one of my favourite subjects, trees!

These studies and have all sold now, so with Christmas been and gone, I'm ready to get back into painting some more studies. I'm finding these are a great in between to painting larger pieces

'Rooted in Pahi - Study'. SOLD

'The Twins - Study' SOLD
(view from my studio window)

I'm in the middle of finishing off pieces for this upcoming exhibition, where we have been working on each others works, visiting each others studios and learning a few new skills to boot!

You're all welcome to our opening night if you're curious to see :)) 6pm Friday the 26th!

Here's a piece I'm doing with Rudy van der Pol, after I received it back from him....it has changed quite a bit since then ;)
