Leys Orchestra

Leys Orchestra We are a community orchestra based at Leys Institute Ponsonby, serving Auckland since 1912. Concerts for 2022 are in June, August, October and November.

Solo oboe and cor anglais feature in the first concert, in Warkworth, plus the premiere performance of 'The Celestial Gate of Praise' by David Hamilton. We are looking forward to this year's Auckland Heritage Festival which was cancelled during lockdown in 2021. This concert focuses on two of the first conductors of Leys Orchestra, and some of the challenges they overcame. The programme highlights

heritage music from that era, and also includes Herold's 'Zampa Overture' which featured in the first concert given by the Orchestra 110 years ago. Rehearsals have been relocated since Leys Institute in Ponsonby was closed by Auckland Council on 21 December 2019 due to earthquake risk. We look forward to returning to our home when repairs to the building and strengthening work are completed.

From DIY to Radio. Come along to our Auckland Heritage Festival concert 2:30pm Sunday 21st September, Freemans Bay Community Hall.

In the pioneering households of early Auckland, warmed by coal fires and lit by kerosene lamps, families had to make much of their own entertainment. Our concert highlights imaginative musical and theatrical entertainment that families turned to in place of diversions such as movies, the internet, radio and television that we take for granted today.

The programme features A.A. Milne's 'The King's Breakfast' – a theatrical number with a narrator who tells and sings the tale of a grumpy king who's upset with his morning meal – along with evocative music of faraway lands, fantastical pieces conjuring enchanted places, and cheeky song-and-dance numbers.

Free admission.
