This week marks the beginning of our Tāmaki Tour, where we’ll bring Sean Macdonald’s Matariki for Tamariki to schools across Tāmaki Makaurau, with special performances in Tauranga, Kerikeri, and the Auckland Museum ✨

For the past two weeks, we’ve been remounting this magical work with Sean in the studio, and we feel honoured to bring it back for its sixth iteration

The studio has been filled with the spirit of Matariki, and we can’t wait to share it with audiences around Aotearoa ✨

Here are some beautiful images from last week during Anya’s awesome process 🌳

Āhua has been an incredible opportunity for the company dancers to develop their choreographic voices and explore their unique ways of leading space.

We are incredibly proud — congratulations to ‘Isope, Caterina, Eden and Anya on an amazing four weeks!

Moe mai rā e Carla.

From all of us at NZDC, we acknowledge with deep sadness the passing of Carla van Zon ONZM (1952–2026). Carla dedicated her life to the arts in Aotearoa as a leader, advocate, and quiet force behind the development of artists and arts organisations across the sector. Her impact was steady, generous, and enduring.

At NZDC, she served as a trustee for many years, and we remain profoundly grateful for her generous leadership, thoughtful counsel, and steadfast advocacy for NZDC. We deeply appreciate her commitment to our mahi.

He pou tokomanawa ia, he kaitiaki i te ao toi. A strong advocate for artists and multidisciplinary practice, she helped shape the wider arts landscape of Aotearoa today.

Ka tuku aroha nui ki tōna whānau, ōna hoa, me te hunga katoa i pāngia e ia.

Haere, haere, haere atu rā. Moe mai i te rangimārie.

On behalf of the NZDC Board, Team, and Artists

Beautiful images of last week’s development of ‘the art of getting by’ - choreographed by Caterina Moreno for Āhua

The company dancers have been relishing in the amazing challenge that Āhua has been. This week Eden has taken on this opportunity to explore ideas around numbness, grief, masking and the performative expressions of emotions - keep an eye out on some footage coming soon 👀

Smiles all around as Week 2 of Āhua kicks off.

We’ve welcomed an incredible group of secondees from the New Zealand School of Dance and Melbourne. Their presence has already brought a fresh surge of energy into the space.

Looking forward to the next three weeks with Kataraina, Aaron, Marcus & Mahni ☀️
