Expressions of Interest are now open to be a part of the Matariki Festival! ✨

Matariki Festival heralds the Māori new year in Tāmaki Makaurau and an opportunity to celebrate this auspicious season.

The festival aims to create an environment where communities can come together to reflect on and celebrate the special time of year known as Matariki.

This year’s theme is Matariki ki te Rangi, celebrating the attributes and kōrero o te Kahui o ngā whetū, Matariki.

Share your stories, film, event, discussions, performance, food and art through your event and be a part of the Matariki Festival 2026 programme.

All accepted events will be listed on the Matariki Festival website.

📅 Matariki Festival 2026 will take place from Saturday 4 July to Sunday 19 July 2026.

✨ Keynote Speaker Spotlight: Kararaina Te Ira ✨

We’re honoured to announce that Kararaina Te Ira will be joining us as a keynote speaker at Tātai Hono - Whakapapa Research Open Day, held at Tāmaki Pātaka Kōrero - Central City Library on Saturday 13th Mahuru (September).

Kararaina brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in cultural heritage, and we are excited for her to share her insights with our hāpori Māori and wider community.

About Kararaina:
Kararaina is the director of Penapena Taonga, an Aotearoa-based cultural heritage consultancy. Her background includes working as a conservator and curator in various institutions both in Aotearoa and internationally, with a particular focus on fashion and textile conservation, art and applied arts curation, audiovisual and paper-based archiving, and collection management and care. She is recognised for her work and commitment to enhancing the cultural heritage experience for all. Kararaina works tirelessly to strengthen the connection between communities and cultural heritage, and continues to dedicate her efforts to supporting Indigenous communities in realising opportunities to create spaces of innovation and creativity.
