Very pleased to have my recent painting, “WOF”, make it through to the finalists exhibition for the Walker & Hall Waiheke Art Award.
The exhibition starts this Friday on the 16th, and runs until the 29th of November. If you’re heading to the island soon, by all means pop in for a look!

“This painting depicts a yellow Suzuki Carry Van outside VTNZ in Invercargill. A rare sunny day in Southland, I was drawn towards this scene for its vivid colour palette. This work contains several of my favourite compositional tools – a simple arrangement, strong horizontal and vertical features, sets of three.”

Great to catch up with Grahame Sydney at his survey exhibition, Close To Home, at Milford Galleries in their new Queenstown space.

Since meeting Grahame 4 years ago, he has been both a good friend and generous mentor, as well as a huge inspiration.

Very often, I catch myself thinking about how interesting and impressive it is that someone can have over 5 decades of professional career under their belt, and yet none of Grahame’s paintings show any trace of repeating themselves. Every new Grahame Sydney painting of Central is a new take, a wholly fresh innovation - one of one. That sort of consistency of excellence and longevity is something I look up to enormously.

The show runs for a month till the 21st of September - I would very highly recommend making the time to see these in person!

The first completed painting of 2026. It is quite a relief to get to the end of this one - a painting that ended up having a lot of repetitive passages, and on a large scale for my standards. It’s been nearly 4 years since trying something this big.
It is interesting to play with such high-contract scenes, and also finding some balance between proximity/wide-open space.
This painting has set the tone for a new direction - I’m looking to spend a large chunk of the next 12-18 months working on bigger pieces.
