DOING IN RIGOROUS CONFUSION
Thursdays 7 & 21 May 6:30-8:30pm


These Thursday evenings are a moment to touch base with your making and do in rigorous confusion*. Utilising performance as practice methodologies we will construct, improvise and perform for one another in an attempt to locate where we are and where to next... These sessions are a chance to check in both together and privately - what am I making? what do I want to make? how do I make with what I have? what does it mean? should I make sense of it?
A facilitative session for practitioners who want to gather together in their creative practice, for a few hours, in the dark.

Note: open to all live performance practitioners. Please bring something to write in.

Rosamund Philpott is a dance artist who is currently completing a creative practice PhD investigating Q***r philosophies of time, phenomenology and historiography. Her practice is rooted in a deep commitment to dancing as the way forward. She is keen to share some of her thoughts, discoveries and methods with other Tāmaki Makaurau performance makers.

We start tonight - And just go. with

This workshop welcomes the whole body into the practice of performance through improvisation. The art of real time composition is delicate and preposterous. We hope to find precision in the nuance and tools for sensitivity. We will move closer to the body in order to move further away from it. We will create shared fictions and grotesque fantasies, challenging our understanding of what it is to dance, what it is to perform.

Through improvised practices we will engage in both practical and intangible tools to harness one’s own performative power and construct solo and group compositions in real time.

This workshop welcomes performers across disciplines open to body based practice. Let’s dance!

Some weeks these sessions will be ‘Dance!’:
Based off David Zambranos ‘Let’s Dance’, we will delve into an improvised score to the length of a full album. Big, bold, brash, and inviting infinite possibilities to dance together. Let’s Just Dance!

Celia Hext is a dance and performance artist whose work brims with emotional ferocity, love, mischief and reverence for land. Her commitment to improvisation as both concept and method champions the immediate, embodied response to the volatility of our world.

🔸In this class, Lulu will explore partnering techniques such as inversions, weight bearing and momentum through lifts and floorwork. She attended the MAAM collective partnering workshop at HennyJurien in Amsterdam earlier this year and is excited to be able to share these new insights with the community.
