Gow Langsford brings its celebrated Spring Catalogue Exhibition to Onehunga for the first time, marking the return of one of the gallery's longest-running exhibition traditions.

A cornerstone of the gallery's programme since the mid-1990s, the Spring Catalogue has long showcased exceptional works by some of Aotearoa New Zealand's most significant artists.

Reimagined for the Onehunga Gallery, this latest iteration continues that legacy with a carefully curated selection of highly accomplished paintings, sculpture and works on paper from leading figures such as Colin McCahon, Ralph Hotere, Gretchen Albrecht, Patrick Hanly and Gordon Walters, alongside works by prominent Australian artists Dale Frank and Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori.

On view from Saturday 24 October until Saturday 21 November 2026.

Contact us for an online preview or the link to view the online publication created by the Gow Langsford team, offering a closer look into each work with insightful writing exploring the artists, ideas and distinctive qualities that make this selection so compelling.

It's the final days to view the group exhibition 'The Studio and the City' at Gow Langsford Onehunga closing this Saturday at 4pm.

This exhibition brings together works by artists whose practices have been shaped by New York's creative landscape across generations. Accompanied by photographs of the artists in their studios, the exhibition offers a glimpse into the environments where these works were conceived, revealing the intimate connection between artist, workspace and artwork.

We are open Thursday-Friday 10-5pm and Saturday 10-4pm.

Since establishing his practice in New York City in the early 2000s, Josh Smith has approached the studio with an irreverence towards its traditional sanctity as the privileged site of artistic creation. Nothing is especially precious and almost nothing is final. “I reserve the right to revisit and revise anything I still have here,” he explains. “That’s largely why I started duplicating my works – because it takes a certain pressure off myself when it comes to thinking and moving forward.”

This freedom extends to error. Smith is interested in mistakes, describing his art as “completely malleable”. Paintings are photographed and laser-printed; prints are cut, pasted and painted over; palettes become paintings; old works are broken down to make new ones. The practical pressures of working in New York are equally productive. His four-by-five-foot panels were determined partly by the dimensions of his building’s elevator and by what could be thrown into a car-service minivan.

Smith strips the studio of its liturgical formalities, treating artistic creation as something provisional, practical and perpetually subject to change. New York enters his work through such mundane constraints: space, transport, economy and expediency become the conditions of his art. “The boards lying here in my studio … are not paintings yet,” he writes. “They’re just sheets of paper right now. They become art as they sit.”

Three works by Julian Schnabel are included in 'The Studio and the City' on now at Gow Langsford Onehunga.

Initially controversial for its scale, colour and refusal to conform to the architectural character of the West Village, Julian Schnabel’s ‘Palazzo Chupi’ has become one of New York City’s most distinctive buildings. Designed by the artist himself, the building comprises five luxury apartments, while Schnabel has retained the lower levels as his studio, exhibition space and home.

With its vivid pink stucco, balconies, arches and ornamental details, the Venetian-style palazzo draws on Schnabel’s longstanding fascination with Italy and European art. His experience of Italian frescoes had a profound influence on his understanding of the relationship between art and space. In part born from a practical necessity for space to create his large-scale works, Schnabel himself states; “What I wanted to do was to find some kind of place where my imagination would not be stopped.”

Like Schnabel’s paintings, Palazzo Chupi is exuberant, unconventional and deliberately resistant to restraint – a portrait of the artist rendered in architecture.
