Maybe The University of Auckland could put some money into saving the St James since it doesn't have a theatre of its own anymore. They do need to hold graduation ceremonies somewhere.

If you want to know more about the St James, there's an online event you can attend this Sunday as part of Auckland Heritage Festival.

Join George Farrant, retired Principal Heritage Advisor, to hear about the building proclaimed as 'Auckland's greatest theatre'.

It's great to be mentioned, but just to clarify, the Maidment Theatre didn't burn down. It closed because the building needs seismic strengthening.

1 Why do they call you 'Mr Theatre'? - New Zealand Herald

Official statement: Following a routine review of current buildings, the University was advised on Thursday 18 December by a consultant engineer that the Maidment Theatre requires seismic strengthening. The University has closed the Maidment for the foreseeable future as a precautionary measure and staff have been relocated to other University buildings.

The University regrets the disruption this will cause but considers the safety of its staff and public is paramount.
