We’re excited to share a first look at New Zealand is a Garden, a new work from Nam Woon Kim, developed as part of PAT’s Fresh Off The Page initiative in Tāmaki Makaurau.

NEW ZEALAND IS A GARDEN by Nam Woon Kim.
“A land surveyor encounters a friendly ghost but fails to heed his warning, dooming a couple who will settle there years later, to a deep hunger beyond their understanding.”

Nam is supported by dramaturg/director Jane Yonge (a mixtape for maladies, Our Own Little Mess, Scenes from a Yellow Peril) along with a stellar cast including returning whānau from last year’s production of Genuine and Stable, Junghwi Jo and Uhyoung Choi, joined by new whānau Hae Yeon Seol and Ben Son. Playwrights assemble!

🌟 PLAYWRIGHTS b4 25 COMPETITION is OPEN 🌟

Blood, bodies and the pleasures of late-stage capitalism. The trials and tribulations of ten-year-olds in love. Chinese market gardeners in the poll tax era. A skateboarding, Emma Thompson-obsessed, man-child who sleeps on the couch. Lip-syncing and loss. Wedding hijinks and a family in meltdown. A Ukrainian football team given an ultimatum by the SS.

These are just some of the top-shelf ideas that have won Playmarket's Playwrights b4 25 Competition. If you were born after 2001 and you’ve been making your laptop sing as you’ve written your latest epic stage saga, Playmarket New Zealand wants to hear all about it.

Whatever the form, whatever the narrative, they're interested in your take on the world.

And bonus - ✨ there’s a cash prize of $1500 up for grabs ✨, courtesy of longstanding supporters and PAT partners Auckland Live!

Past recipients include Jess Sayer, Nathan Joe, Talia Pua, Jack McGee, Te Huamanuka Luiten-Apirana, Sam Brooks, Cassandra Tse, Alex Medland, and many more.

Entries close 1 April.
