We were delighted to open our newest exhibition, Hilinga mea’a o te maramataka, on Friday 14 August and thank everyone who joined us to celebrate the opening.

Hilinga mea’a o te maramataka celebrates culture, creativity and connection across Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa. Supported by the University of Auckland’s Centre for Arts and Social Transformation and the NZ National Commission for UNESCO, Selekā artists and Aotearoa teaching artists collaborated with the displaced community of ‘Atatā Si’i. Through shared creative practice, they celebrated resilience, strengthened relationships and advanced the vision of Tonga’s first Contemporary Arts and Community Centre.

The exhibition features artists Tevita Latu, Yasmin Aho, Taniela Petelo, Katy Perez, Ercan Cairns, Isla Thomas and is on display from 14 August - 19 September 2026.

Thank you to the café next door to our gallery for allowing us to have tea, coffee and kai next door. And a special thank you to Pho Kitchen for supplying us with a yummy spread for our guests.

Hilinga mea’a o te maramataka

Hilinga mea’a o te maramataka celebrates culture, creativity and connection across Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa. Huge thank you to everyone who joined us for our Free Whānau Canvas Workshops these school holidays at Fresh Gallery Ōtara! A special thank you to artists Jerome and Eileen Teina-Tata for sharing their skills, creativity, guidance, and encouragement throughout both workshops. These workshops would not have been possible without the generous support of the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board. Got amazing ideas and strong community vibes? Exhibit with us in 2027.

Franklin Arts Centre, Fresh Gallery Ōtara, Māngere Arts Centre, Nathan Homestead Pukepuke, and Papakura Art Gallery are inviting proposals for their 2027 exhibition programmes.

We’re on the lookout for bold, thought-provoking ideas that connect with community and celebrate creativity across all artforms. Whether you’re an artist, curator, collective, or community group, we want to hear from you.

This is your chance to exhibit in one of Auckland Council’s leading local arts venues, with curatorial support and modest funding available to help bring your vision to life.

Join us these school holidays for a relaxed, hands-on art workshop at Fresh Gallery Ōtara. Create your own canvas using a variety of stencils and guided techniques with artists Jerome and Eileen Teina-Tata. Suitable for all ages, the workshop explores colour, creativity, and self-expression.

We were delighted to open Matariki: Threads of Light – Whakapapa in Colour by Jermon Teina-Tata on Friday evening and thank all who joined us.

Jerome Teina-Tata weaves together ancestry, grief, survival and renewal through contemporary Māori storytelling, blending urban expression with spiritual symbolism. Each work honours the connection between whenua, atua, stars and whakapapa, reflecting jounreys of loss and healing beneath the returning light of Matariki.
