Auckland Opera Studio

Auckland Opera Studio First they learn to sing . . . then to fly. somewhere their talents can thrive. We want to help New Zealand's young opera talents to find their way and flourish!

The years following opera training are crucial yet professional coaching is most often not financially viable for young singers. The Auckland Opera Studio was established to provide New Zealand's opera singers with personalised coaching, at no cost to themselves, within an environment of knowledge, enthusiasm and support . . . We provide this professional support to both young singers and successf

ul professional opera singers - offering the opportunity for them to realise their full potential, both within New Zealand and in preparation for International study and performance work. We also provide a space for young pianists interested in accompanying or coaching these classes. Frances Wilson’s school of development for New Zealand’s top young opera singers - The Auckland Opera Studio – has been forging the way for New Zealand’s future operatic stars for over ten years. Frances has dedicated her life to fostering that certain sound so present in the Bel Canto style of singing taught by the likes of Dame Sister Mary Leo, Virginia Zeani and Frances herself and made famous by such indelible voices as Dame Kiri Tekanawa, Dame Malvina Major and the late Dame Heather Begg. Board of Trustees: Frances Wilson, Stephen Fitzgerald, Peter Rowe, Vlasta Shanahan, Wayne Hughes, Niamh McMahon and Jack Bourke

The Strad called it "blazing insight and dazzling virtuosity." That's Amalia Hall in five words.

Concertmaster of Orchestra Wellington, violinist of NZTrio — New Zealand's most indispensable ensemble — and one of the most sought-after soloists in the country, Amalia has performed with leading orchestras across Europe, the Americas and beyond. She made her solo debut with the Auckland Philharmonia at age nine. She hasn't stopped since.

On 28 June, she joins the Auckland Opera Studio 2026 Opera Gala at the Great Hall, Auckland Town Hall — bringing that extraordinary voice of her instrument into an evening of Carmen, Tosca, Thaïs and more, alongside the Manukau Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Choral and a cast of New Zealand's finest singers.

We are so honoured to have her with us.

A gala needs a great orchestra. We are so proud and grateful to welcome back the Manukau Symphony Orchestra and conductor Uwe Grodd.

Founded in 1993 in the heart of South Auckland, the MSO brings together professional, youth and community musicians in a spirit that is unlike any other orchestra in Aotearoa.

At the podium since day one, Uwe Grodd is a Naxos recording artist with over 80 world premiere recordings, a Cannes Classical Award winner and Professor Emeritus of the University of Auckland — one of the most respected conductors in New Zealand's musical life.

Together with Auckland Choral, they are the force that will lift this gala to something truly unforgettable. An evening of Carmen, Tosca, Thaïs and more — with a full orchestra and choir filling the Great Hall.

This is what opera is made for.
