The years following opera training are crucial yet professional coaching is most often not financially viable for young singers. The Auckland Opera Studio was established to provide New Zealand's opera singers with personalised coaching, at no cost to themselves, within an environment of knowledge, enthusiasm and support . . . We provide this professional support to both young singers and successf

ul professional opera singers - offering the opportunity for them to realise their full potential, both within New Zealand and in preparation for International study and performance work. We also provide a space for young pianists interested in accompanying or coaching these classes. Frances Wilson’s school of development for New Zealand’s top young opera singers - The Auckland Opera Studio – has been forging the way for New Zealand’s future operatic stars for over ten years. Frances has dedicated her life to fostering that certain sound so present in the Bel Canto style of singing taught by the likes of Dame Sister Mary Leo, Virginia Zeani and Frances herself and made famous by such indelible voices as Dame Kiri Tekanawa, Dame Malvina Major and the late Dame Heather Begg. 2024 NZ Opera Freemasons Foundation Company Artist. Winner of the Napier Aria. Performer with New Zealand Opera, the Auckland Philharmonia, Festival Opera. One of the most compelling Samoan baritones to emerge from Aotearoa in a generation.

The critics have tried to describe it. "Gallons of voice and glowing emotional phrases." "Mana and magic." "Utterly bewitching." None of them quite capture it — because the truth is, you have to be there.

Felicity has spent the last few years becoming one of the most decorated sopranos of her generation — winner of the 100th Herald Sun Aria in Melbourne, the Sydney Eisteddfod Opera Scholarship, and the Lockwood New Zealand Aria. This September she heads to the UK's National Opera Studio, one of the most coveted training programmes in the world.

But first — one more night in Auckland.

On 28 June, Felicity takes the stage at the Great Hall, Auckland Town Hall, as part of the Auckland Opera Studio 2026 Opera Gala. Carmen. Tosca. Thaïs. Beside her: soprano Breony Bearman, tenor Ridge Ponini, baritone Alfred Fonoti-Fuimaono and violinist Amalia Hall — with the Manukau Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Choral and conductor Uwe Grodd. Directed by John Davies.

This is the biggest night on Auckland's opera calendar. And Felicity is at the heart of it.

The Auckland Opera Studio Opera Gala 2026, in association wirh Manukau Symphony Orchestra brings together five extraordinary soloists — sopranos Felicity Tomkins and Breony Bearman - Soprano, tenor Ridge Ponini, baritone Alfred Fonoti-Fuimaono and violinist Amalia Hall — joined by the Manukau Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Choral, and conductor Uwe Grodd, on the stage of the Great Hall at Auckland Town Hall.

Carmen. Tosca. Cavalleria Rusticana. Faust. Manon Lescaut. Thaïs. The greatest music in opera, performed at full scale, in one of Auckland's most magnificent spaces. Directed by John Davies, this is the opera event of 2026.
